The Dancing With the Stars pros got engaged on New Year's Day, a source confirms to Usmagazine.com.

Chmerkovskiy -- who started a controversy when he named dancers on the ABC show that needed to lose weight -- popped the question to his girlfriend of six months with a Harry Winston ring, according to E! News, which first reported the story.
A source close to the pair calls the engagement a surprise.
"We are all shocked!" the source tells Us. "They really rushed into this.
"I wish them the best, of course, I don't know what Karina's thinking," the source adds. "She's just a hopeless romantic who wants a storybook romance."

Smirnoff split from Mario Lopez in June after about two years of dating.
The couple are currently touring with Dancing With the Stars, and were between shows in Salt Lake City and Tulsa, Oklahoma, when they got engaged.
