Taylor Swift won't be flexing her pipes on movie screens anytime soon - she was reportedly dropped from consideration to play Eponine in the upcoming remake of "Les Miserables."
Stage star Samantha Barks will take on the role instead of Swift and other starlets, including Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood. The dark-haired actress will join the likes of Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway for the film, due for release in December.
The 22-year-old singer has conquered the music world in the three years since the debut of her country song "Tim McGraw." Since then, she's shattered sales records and dated Hollywood hottie Jake Gyllenhaal. The next natural step is acting, right?
Not so fast.
Swift first stepped in acting waters with an episode of "CSI" in 2009. She played a murdered teen on the show, so it didn't exactly stretch her acting chops.
Taylor's Big Screen Debut Gets Panned
The curly-haired cutie later appeared opposite ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner in the 2010 ensemble comedy "Valentine's Day." She was slammed for her acting skills in the movie by both movie fans and critics.
"Some teen viewers may be drawn by the lure of the two Taylors, but their time onscreen together arguably reps the film's low point," Variety critic Todd McCarthy wrote at the time. "Swift, especially, seems entirely undirected, as she jumps around, makes faces and jabbers on inanely. If she's to have a film career, she needs to find a skilled director to tamp her down and channel her obviously abundant energy."
Will 'The Lorax' Redeem Taylor Swift's Acting Skills?
Swift will appear onscreen again - at least her voice will - in the upcoming animated adaptation of Dr. Suess' "The Lorax." The film co-stars Zac Efron, Betty White and Danny DeVito as the Lorax.
"Audrey has these impossible dreams," Swift explains of her character. "She dreams of things that are gone. Trees have been long forgotten."
She is likely better suited for this sort of role - her syrupy-sweet personality can shine through in a children's film. It also doesn't require her to show in-depth acting range, something she hasn't yet developed.
Despite the "Les Miserables" setback, it's likely the singer has a future in acting, if for nothing other than her marquee-worthy name. We have a tip, though: Take some acting lessons, Taylor - stat!
