Sean "Diddy" Combs says he was only being "a friend" when he invited
Chris Brown and
Rihanna to stay and his Miami home nearly three weeks after the 19-year-old singer allegedly battered his girlfriend, 21.
"I don't cast a judgment on anybody," Diddy said on Tuesday's
Ellen DeGeneres Show. "It's a dark time for them, and I'm there for support."
See photos of Chris and Rihanna through the yearsDeGeneres told him she didn't want any girl out there thinking it's OK to go back to a guy who abused her.
"I don't think it's right for anybody to hit anybody," Diddy replied. "We know sometimes relationships get ugly ... we don't know exactly what's going on [with them]."
Added their pal, "We need to pray for them, and we need to do things to support them."

She is
dedicating her live talk show Thursday to "all the Rihannas of the world."

Chris Brown and
Rihanna , if I was your friend, I would call you up and I would say, 'Give it some time, get yourself some counseling, take care of yourself. Heal yourself first.'"
She added, "And also, love doesnt hurt. I've been saying this to women for years: 'If a man hits you once, he will hit you again.'"
Brown, who has been charged with two felonies and remains free on $50,000 bail, is to be arraigned April 6.
If convicted, he faces anywhere from probation to four years and eight months in state prison.
