Details about the night Justin Theroux proposed to Jennifer Aniston

The news that Jennifer Aniston said yes to Justin Theroux’s marriage proposal spread like wildfire Sunday night. But other than a statement from his rep – which said that the actor-screenwriter “had an amazing birthday on Friday, receiving an extraordinary gift when his girlfriend, Jennifer Aniston, accepted his proposal of marriage" – little was known about how the engagement happened. Now more details are trickling out.

Aniston and Theroux had been in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she has been filming her latest movie “We’re the Millers.” So to celebrate Theroux’s 41st birthday, they flew by private plane to New York City for a romantic weekend. Although it was Theroux’s big day to receive gifts, he felt like giving one. Us Weekly reports that he was a “bundle of jangled nerves … because the only present he wanted was to hear Jennifer Aniston say yes to his proposal.”

When Theroux popped the question, the 43-year-old former “Friends” star cried, reports Us Weekly. “The proposal was simple. He was surprised she said yes, but he is so happy.” And the ring – which he helped design – is “stunning,” a friend tells the magazine. After it was official, they shared the happy news with their closest family members and friends, including Aniston’s father, “Days of Our Lives” star John Aniston. “John was one of the first people Jen called,” a source told People magazine. “He loves how happy Justin makes his daughter.” Theroux’s sister, Elizabeth, was happy to hear the news as well, telling People, “We’re so happy to welcome her to the family.”

Later that night the newly engaged couple had dinner at Blue Hill, a low-profile Manhattan restaurant that serves food mostly raised or grown on an organic farm it runs just outside the city. People reports that Aniston, who looked “stunning,” and Theroux sat side-by-side at an intimate corner table during their meal. While there was no showing off a ring or uncorking Champagne, they “looked like a long-term couple in love having a romantic dinner,” a patron told the magazine. However, Us Weekly notes Aniston wasn’t trying to hide the fact that Theroux had just proposed. “She was celebrating her engagement” at Blue Hill, a source tells the magazine. “It’s one of their favorite restaurants and they have had dates there before.”

While it’s too early to really talk wedding plans – give the gal a break … she’s been engaged for five days! – both Us Weekly and People say that this wedding will be drastically different from her million-dollar wedding to Brad Pitt in 2000. “It will likely be a destination wedding, kind of like eloping with a few friends,” a friend of the couple told Us Weekly. And although Aniston has a slew of close girlfriends – including Courteney Cox, Chelsea Handler, and Laura Dern – there likely won’t be bridesmaids or a wedding party. Noted the friend, “Justin isn’t as flashy as the men she’s been with in the past, so it won’t go too over-the-top.”
