Denis Leary Blames "Inattentive Mothers" on Autism Crisis

Us Magazine - October 15, 2008 2:00 PM PDT
In his new book, Why We Suck: A Feel-Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid, Denis Leary writes that autism is a joke.

"There is a huge boom in autism right now because inattentive mothers and competitive dads want an explanation for why their dumb-ass kids can't compete academically, so they throw money into the happy laps of shrinks . . . to get back diagnoses that help explain away the deficiencies of their junior morons. I don't give a [bleep] what these crackerjack whack jobs tell you - yer kid is NOT autistic. He's just stupid. Or lazy. Or both."

The Autism Society of America has fired back: "For Mr. Leary to suggest that families or doctors conspire to falsely diagnose autism is ridiculous . . . [His] remarks reflect the same misconceptions of autism being caused by bad or unemotional parenting that were held over 50 years ago."

He does have a point. I don't totally agree, but some kids are lazy and become adluts like me.

Just goes to show, give too much to celebrities and they think they can say anything. My nephew was diagnosed at age 3 and I can say he is neither a moron, nor lazy nor stupid. Maybe if Leary had somewhat of a heart that had an ounce of compassion he could comprehend the realness of this disability. But then again, he is a poor excuse for a human so he wouldn't understand this at all.

He has also read Moby Dick, Pride & Predjudice, & many other highschool or college level books. he is 12. Furthermore, his dad died before he was born, so um not competitive. how does that fit in

Denis Leary Blames is a big fcu%^& ignorant person. He is wasted space on this planet. Someone needs to hit him with a bus already and take him out of his misery. He's obviously unhappy and feels that he needs to bash on people who have a much higher intelligence than him. I have a 10 year old autistic brother and he is definatley smarted than that ignrorant nasty b@stard!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Leary is only displaying his ignorance. It is not his fault he is just uneducated (poor guy). If I even had intentions of buying his new book I know I won't now. My son is 12 and autistic I have never been anything but a loving mother and I still love him and am extremely proud of him and his progress autistic or not.

Ramona has it right- Leary is just looking to get publicity for his new book, the age of enlightenment for idiots. There aren't many people who have not had someone they know or someone in their family touched by autism. If he isn't one of them, then he should be thankful. These remarks are so inflammatory, they don't warrant a response- they are laughable! I won'

Denis Leary is an absolute idiot. He should know better than to call autistic kids stupid and lazy; even though these kids aren't as socially developed as the rest of us, many have highly intellectual or even genius qualities. My brother has had autism ever since he was a little boy, but he was demonstrated amazing artistic abilities, before he could even write, that college art majors wou

you seriously have got to be kidding me. my son is 5 now and hes autistic he rarely watches tv and has to work harder than the kids just to be able to process the information that comes easily to them. its hard to see your child have the brains to do something but not have the communication skills to get his point across. people uneducated in the area shouldnt post comments
