Demi Lovato hasn't had the easiest of times this year, but last night she was honored with the Acuvue Inspire Award at the Teen Choice Awards. And she never would have nabbed the prize had she not gone through the low points of her journey.
The Acuvue Inspire Award Honors a Celebrity Who Fosters Positive Thinking
According to the Teen Choice Awards' official website, the honor is presented by the Acuvue contact lens company to recognize "the achievements of a celebrity teen and his/her outstanding charitable contributions over the past year. By using his/her celebrity positively, this honoree inspires teens to give back and strive to attain their goals, proving that one day everyone can achieve their dreams."
Lovato recently partnered with Seventeen magazine and the Jed Foundation to launch the Love is Louder than the Pressure to Be Perfect campaign. As Lovato explained in a YouTube video in April, "There's a ton of pressure out there to meet impossible standards '" to look right, be smart, be thin, talented and popular. And many of us feel like we have to be everything to everyone, but it doesn't have to be that way."
The actress and singer urges teens who are overwhelmed by the pressure to be perfect to find an outlet '" as she has done with painting. She also implores kids who feel in despair and alone to get help.
Tyler Pose and Charice Present the Acuvue Inspire Award to Demi Lovato
Last night at the ceremony, "Teen Wolf" star Tyler Posey and singer Charice presented Lovato with the award. As Posey said in the introduction, "For a lot of teens the world can seem to be moving too fast and life can be frightening and overwhelming at times. So it's easy to lack self-confidence and motivation. So Acuvue has created the Acuvue Inspire Award to go to a star who has inspired many teens."
Charice listed the teen stars greatest accomplishments to date, "Demi Lovato broke through with her role in the TV movie 'Camp Rock' and her own series 'Sunny with a Chance' and sold out shows across the country and in South America."
Demi Lovato's Love Is Louder Campaign is at the Heart of Her Acuvue Inspire Award
Posey addressed the turmoil that has led to Lovato's personal growth this year, saying, "Unfortunately her latest tour was cut short as Demi made the brave decision to seek help for personal issues including depression and an eating disorder that she has been dealing with for most of her life. So she helped found the Love is Louder than the Pressure to be Perfect campaign."
Lovato came to the stage to accept her surfboard trophy and pay tribute to her fans. She gushed to a roaring crowd, "Thank you so much. Well first of all I just want to say thank you to Acuvue, I can't even speak I'm so nervous right now, and Teen Choice. But first of all thank you. You guys are who did this for me. I couldn't have made it through the incredible journey that I went through without your help and your strength that got me through it. You guys are what got me through the last year. I love you so much. Love is louder. I love you guys so much."
The Acuvue Inspire Award wasn't the only honor that Lovato nabbed at the TCA's. She also was given the Teen Choice Award for Song of the Summer for her recent release "Skycraper." After receiving her awards, Lovato tweeted, "Wow... Speechless... Today was amazing. I LOVE you guys...."
