David Slade On 'Twilight' Comments: 'I Was Being Silly'

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Director David Slade is now howling his regrets to the "Twilight" fans.

David, the slated director of the franchise's third film, "Eclipse," sent an e-mail to Twilight Lexicon, one of the largest "Twilight" fan sites, after it was revealed on Sunday that had made disparaging comments about the vampire franchise.

"When I made these comments, I had neither seen the film nor read the books. I was promoting a comedy short film that I had made for Xbox and every pop culture subject was seen as a possible comedy target. I was being silly and none of the statements were from the heart," David explained.

He continued to write, "Of course, I have since seen the movie and read the books and was quickly consumed with the rich storytelling and the beautifully honest characters that Stephenie Meyer created."

On Sunday, /Film.com revealed an archived audio clip of David from the BDK movie show on WJFK in Washington DC, where he attacked "Twilight."

When talking about what movie he was going to see, he took aim at the popular vampire franchise.

"'Twilight' drunk? No, not even drunk. 'Twilight' on acid? No, not even on acid? 'Twilight' at gun point? Just shoot me."

It has also been reported that David tweeted a negative comment about the franchise on his Twitter account, which has since been deleted.

In his note today, David sought to appease the die-hard fan base.

"I would like to reassure everyone involved that I am invested in making the best film that I am humanly capable of, and that I am acutely aware of the power of the original books we serve."

Actor Kellan Lutz, who plays vampire Emmett Cullen in the series, voiced his support of David when Access Hollywood caught up with Kellan on Monday night.

"I really don't get in that dirt, if he didn't see it and if he didn't like it, it doesn't mean he's not talented," Kellan told Access.

"I still think he'll bring a great vision to 'Eclipse,'" Kellan said.
