David Letterman Near Deal to Stay on Late Show Through 2014

David Letterman was passed over to succeed Johnny Carson as host of The Tonight Show, but is now poised to dethrone Carson as the longest-running late-night star in TV history.

Letterman, 64, is nearing a deal with CBS that would keep him behind the desk of the Late Show through 2014, according to The New York Times. 2014 will mark his 32nd year in late night (11 years on NBC's Late Night followed by what would be 21 years on CBS).  Carson was on the air in late night for 30 years.

As Dave catches Jay, are the late night wars over?

CBS has been authorized by Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants, to make new deals with the show's staff, producers and writers, according to the newspaper. Although this indicates a deal with Letterman is "very close," as a source tells the Times, the future of CBS' other late-night host, Craig Ferguson, is uncertain. He may choose not to continue as the host of The Late Late Show.

Although it was believed that Letterman would retire at the end of his current two-year deal, which expires in August, he is now likely to stay on TV. Ferguson has a clause in his contract that he will succeed Letterman whenever he chooses to step down. However, Ferguson may leave CBS if he is not offered a big salary or a higher production budget for his show, according to the Times.

Are you happy David Letterman is staying in late night?

Very glad indeed. Won't watch Leno at all - and I would be happy to be the third person named "Craig" to host the later show, or even co-host, sidekick,... you know

The "powers that are" could take Letterman and Leno off the TV and the whole world wouldn't care and not a little bit. Their shows have gotten to be just plain nasty. Letterman uses Gods name in vain all the time. What's so sad is, he doesnt know he does it. Leno just reads what is in front of him. That's sad too.

The other night Dave did went off on a huge tangent about Jesus which was utterly hysterical. Lighten up.

Yes! As much as I make remarks to the tv, I would miss him. Having said that, I think he would like to be with his son more. I would be happy for him what ever he wants to do.

Dave is the only truly natural comedian of the bunch, which is why Johnny liked him so much.
Leno isn’t funny at all. He still thinks put-down jokes are funny, that went out back in the 70’s.

I can't watch Leno and I don't know anyone that does.Letterman is much better because Leno seems deperate at times and he's not funny.Ferguson has good show as well, but I believe he and Fallon are good at their present time slots.

Letterman is not funny. He does his best to be like Johnny Carson, but he falls flat. HOW ABOUT THAT WEATHER TODAY? ANYBODY HERE FROM VERMONT? HEE, HEE, HEE. Is that humor? Oh, make an entrance like a bowlegged penguin with hemhorroids. Fantastic. I watch him when he has intelligent guests on the show, but then he reaffirms that they should have been interviewed by a more intelligent person - BLAH. I think he should spend much more time with his son Harley, or Harry. Good Luck.

Amazing they would even attempt. They could randomly choose any from the first hundred people that pass by the studio, get more talent and at a cheaper price.

Haven't watched dave since he left like a poosie so long ago...He like coco were barely funny to begin with. Used to watch craig. He's got some funny bits that will all go away if goes on sooner. At least kimmel has some personality to his show. But, really don't watch any of them. They're like the news. Why bother.

I am not crazy about him and whether or not I watch him depends on who he has on. However if it is between he and Craig Ferguson.I would take Letterman hands down. I can't think of printable words to describe how I loath Graig Ferguson.
