David Archuleta On Cook's Win: 'I'm So Proud Of Him… He Earned It'

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Seventeen-year-old David Archuleta made a major impact on "America Idol" all season long. From his tender cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" to his sweet rendition of the Robbie Williams standard "Angels," Archuleta was a heavy vote getter who was always sent to the safety seats, until last night, when America voted and named his 25-year-old competitor, rocker David Cook, the "American Idol."

"I was already planning on Cook winning," Archuleta revealed to Access Hollywood last night following the show's Season 7 finale.

Even after Simon Cowell declared he had knocked out Cook during Tuesday's broadcast, Archuleta had his doubts.

"I didn't believe it," the baby-faced teen said. "I'm just really glad that my performances for that night accomplished what I wanted to do. I wanted to show people that I'm giving it my all for this last final blow."

Archuleta said it wasn't Cook's final performance that sent him on the road to victory, but how he impressed America throughout the entire dramatic season.

"He's shown how talented he is and how great of a person he is through the past [weeks]," Archuleta said. "It's not just based on that one week. That's why it lasts so long - so people can get to know you, and how you handle yourself and how you do things with your music… He just kept going up all the way to the top It's just been really cool to see it."

And though he lost on the top slot to Cook, Archuleta said he didn't mind considering what a genuine guy the 25-year-old is.

"He's a great guy. It's been really neat," Archuleta said. "It's such an honor to be able to stand next to him. It's someone I've admired so much, someone I've looked up to both musically and as a person."

When Cook was crowned the "American Idol," he told Archuleta he loved the high schooler like a brother, and Archie as he was affectionately called, had some words for Cook too.

"I just wanted to let him know that I'm so proud of him, that he earned it," Archuleta shared. "Before we were there in the winners [circle], I said, 'You know, you've earned it. You've earned all of this.' He just so deserved to win."

And the teen received even more praise from his family and in particular, father Jeff, who sat cheering his son on all season long.

"I think he said, 'I'm so proud of you.' My whole family has just been so great," he said. "They've just been awesome."

David A was my favorite from the beginning along with Michael Johns who I thought was the total package for a rocker (not David C!) I was shocked when MJ's was voted off - he had great performances every time and in my opinion should've been one of the last ones standing, we didn't get the chance to see all that he had to offer with his premature departure. I'm ro

I'm proud of Archie for showing such good sportsmanship. He definitely is a sweet and humble 17 year old, way beyond his years and I hope he continues to sing and bless us all with his angelic voice ! Though I am happy for Cook, I think musically, the true winner should have been David Archuleta.

I truly believe that both Davids are blessed. They both are talented singers in their own right. David A will continue to grow as he grows. There is so much talent there. David C. is much older and this is probably is start to being a star. They both are gentlemen and wonderful beings. I can only wish them the best and in my heart they both won.

I love David A., he should have won.It would have been another impact for AI if a 17 yr. old kid, inocent-looking and good nature had won compared with David C. who is so experienced in this field.

I think all who try out for American Idol could take a lesson from either of the Davids. They both showed kindness, consideration of others, took all the judges had to offer and built each week on that. I feel they BOTH will have some great music comming out, each in there own way. Stay the way you are. Yes I had a favorite like everyone else his name was David. How awesome is that, two Davids.

They both are winners. Both of them should be proud of themselves. Two different styles, two winners. Too bad there couldn't have been a tie. Everyone would have been happy.

People who comment on Cook's win are NOT ook Haters it's just that it's soooo unfair that the Archie who really deserves it didn't win. After all this is a singing contest NOT a popularity contest. Cook has all the trappings but not the vocals...so sad. I think Archie lost cos of his dad being overbearing etc...sad........ Archies YOUR DA BEST!!!

Argh (that was my frustration on these comments I've read). Anyways, I'm glad Cook won. Even though I PERSONALLY wanted Arcie to win, I'm OK with it. They are both just so sweet and have good voices (although, Archie has a better voice but I might be a bit biased). I can't wait for both of their albums to come out! It's going to be awesome!
