Dave Grohl: The Beatles Were A 'Huge Influence' On Kurt Cobain & I

Dave Grohl is a multi-talented musician -- boasting incredible guitar, drum and vocal skill -- and the former Nirvana drummer says he owes it all to The Beatles.

"When I was young, that's how I learned how to play music -- I had a guitar and a Beatles songbook," Dave told Access Hollywood at the 2012 MusiCares Person of the Year Tribute to Paul McCartney in Los Angeles on Friday. "I would listen to the records and play along. Of course, it didn't sound like The Beatles, but it got me to understand song structure and melody and harmony and arrangement.

"So, I never had a teacher -- I just had these Beatles records," he added.

The Foo Fighters frontman also revealed the British band's influence continued from his childhood into his years with Nirvana alongside the late Kurt Cobain.

"Even in Nirvana -- the Beatles [were] such a huge influence," he said. "Kurt loved The Beatles because it was just so simple.

"Well, it seemed simple... they sound easy to play, but you know what? They're [expletive] hard!" he added.

Watch Dave rock the stage with the Foo Fighters - along with David Guetta, Lil Wayne, Deadmau5 and more - during a tribute to electronic music at the 54th Grammy Awards on Sunday at 8/7c on CBS.

It's true! And David Grohl was a hardcore punk drummer in Washington DC before hooking up with Cobain and has stated numerous times he was influenced mostly by punk rock.

Not true he loved John Lennon --the biggest of them all

And yet the influence is clear. Listen to "Serve the Servants", take away the distortion...it could easily pass for a Beatles song musically.

      Hey Dave:

Glad the Beatles were your biggest influence. As a huge Beatles fan for almost 40 years, they are the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Dave Grohl has reached the point that whenever he gets mentioned or thought of, he is placed in the Foo Fighters first and Nirvana second.

Love Nirvana but its about #$%$ time. And lets just call it he is a thousand time better musician than Kurt Cobain.

I would hope that he has reached that point...But maybe not until now, will that take affect. People will always know him as a Renaissance man of alternative rock. Nirvana, Tom Petty/heartbreakers, foo fighters, queens of the stone age, tenacious d, and them crooked vultures (w/ john paul jones)....he is a god of rock

I was 10 when Nevermind came out and grunge was just about all we grew up with. I remember when the Foo Fighters released their first record. It was kind of a crap shoot then but the record was #$%$ good. They followed it up with an even better record in the Colour and the Shape and have not looked back since. The most talented and versatile musician since John Lennon.

Nirvana killed the music I grew up with....80's Metal. I resisted Nirvana until about 1993. Now, Dave and Foos are my favorite band (listening to them now). LOL, Dave is actually doing a project with Stephen Pearcy and Warren DiMartini from Ratt, one of my favorite 80's Metal bands. That's what I like about the Foos. All music matters. They'll do anything...

Dear headline writer: it's "on me", not "on I". "Me" is the object pronoun, not "I".
      • Zhimbo 3 months ago
If it was a quote from Grohl, that'd be one thing. But it isn't, so it's the failed grammar of the professional journalist that's at fault.

"...were a huge influence on Kurt Cobain and I." ..Dave didn't really say that, did he? People don't talk like that unless they're not sure and overcorrecting their grammar. Did someone at Yahoo try to play editor again? BIZARRO!!

Dave Grohl: The Beatles Were A 'Huge Influence' On Kurt Cobain & ME. Not "& I". Don't editors ever look at this garbage and correct it?

I lost some respect for Foo Fighters when they decided to take part in the Live 8 concert.
I lost total respect when they dedicated the song "My Hero" to Al Gore. *A*L* *G*O*R*E*
They should have known the Global Warming is myth perpetrated by Al Gore to promote
      a system of world governance.
