Variety reports the thriller - starring the
late
Heath Ledger as the Joker - could have the highest
opening ever for a non-holiday weekend if sales stay strong on
Saturday and Sunday. (
Spider-Man 3 still holds the title,
with $151 million for the weekend.)

The Dark Knight took in an estimated $18.5 million in
midnight shows, beating the previous midnight record set by
Star
Wars, Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith, which grossed $16.9
million.
The last Batman installment, 2006's
Batman Begins, grossed
$15 million on its opening day and $48.7 million for the
weekend.
