Clive Davis gala is white-hot; Kinks to perform

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — The annual pre-Grammy Clive Davis gala is so hot this year that even Diddy is getting calls from celebrities who are trying to get on the bill — and in the seats.

Diddy will introduce Davis at the event Saturday, held one day before the Grammy Awards.

Davis said Diddy called his cellphone Friday, saying, "Everybody is trying to get me to call you."

"The demand is so overwhelming," said Davis, who has hosted the event for 37 years. "How do you tell people who've been coming for 10, 20 years, that it's not a lifetime pass?"

The pre-Grammy party is always white-hot and has featured performances from top acts like Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Carlos Santana. This year, The Kinks will take the stage to play a medley of their hits, with the help of Jackson Browne and Elvis Costello. Mumford & Sons are hoping to arrive in time to get in on the performance, Davis said.

"It remains to be seen if their flight lands early enough, if we'll go on without a rehearsal. But Mumford & Sons (said), '(They're) our biggest influence. We love Ray Davies, we love The Kinks.'"

At the Beverly Hilton on Friday, Alicia Keys was getting ready to rehearse. Monica and Brandy will also hit the stage. Vintage clips of the annual event played on the big screen, showing performances from Houston, Lou Reed, Rod Stewart, Aretha Franklin and Usher.

Houston isn't on the performance list, but that could change.

"It's her favorite night of the year ... (so) who knows by the end of the evening," said Davis, who founded Arista Records and is now the chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment.

I don't care about the rest of that bunch, but the Kinks are "The Top of the Pops!". I'd say that I'd have to watch the show just to see them, but nah, I'll just wait a day or two and catch 'em on YouTube! GSTK!

It's Ray Davies who is performing, not The Kinks. I very much doubt that Dave Davies will be there, and without Dave there are no Kinks. Anyway, lucky are the people who will be there. Ray is a brilliant performer. I love him.

Glad to see some one on here has some intelligence. Ray Davies is awsome, too bad the Kinks couldn't reunite.

I don't care how many of the original Kinks show up! Any one of them has more talent than a decade of what I've been listening to lately.

This award is and always will be garbage. Homer Simpson has one and is as proud of it as a parent with a thieving, junkie child. LMFAO !

The title is incorrect...It is Ray Davies being joined by others doing Kinks songs...brother Dave and Mick Avory wont be there. Should still be fantastic

I read that Mick was agreeable to a reunion but Dave wasn't interested. Still, Ray performing is always a superior show. Hope someone videotapes it and makes a good audio recording.

Do you know what's missing in music these days? A Whitney Houston. I guess I should say a talent like Whitney used to be. I miss that.

I hope the Dave Clark Five can make it too. What year is it again?
