LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Clay Aiken fans got a not-so-big shock on Wednesday, as the former "Idol" came out on the cover of People with the message, "Yes, I'm Gay."

Yet, the current "Spamalot" star told the mag he knew he was taking a risk.

"If [fans] leave, I don't want them to leave hating me," he said.

So how did they react?

Judging by Claymates writing on the official message boards on Clayaiken.com, the singer has nothing to worry about.

"I personally give him credit for coming out and being a man and telling the truth once and for all," wrote a user named Claysnjgal.

"I'm thrilled to hear the news," seconded Marinclaymate. "Love the man!"

Others were a little disappointed - but not because they disapprove.

"Well, I guess I'll have to stop having romantic fantasies about him!" Wind Goddess wrote.

Clay himself was overwhelmed by the response, writing on his personal Web site's message board, "I am speechless," according to People.

"My family is so much bigger than Parker, Jaymes, mom, Brett, etc. It extends to each of you. And I couldn't be more blessed," he added.

New son Parker, who was conceived via in vitro fertilization with friend Jaymes Foster, was the inspiration for Clay's admission.

"It was the first decision I made as a father," he told People. "I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."

If you can live a happier and free life coming out why are so many gays hiding? Because they know it's wrong. They're not going to be happy out of or in the closet but they might as well tell the truth so that people will know what they are. As for Claymates, how many are left, one or two? There's not enough multiple identities and gays in the media to keep that lie going.

I'm so proud of Clay for coming out. Like Lance Bass, and other people in Hollywood are saying, he can live a happier free life now. And I do not care what other people think Clay Aiken will need the fans more than ever now.

It was the worst kept secret in Hollywood. Even Triumph the insult comic dog outed Clay Aiken. Here's a quote from Triumph, "I ranked the contestants with three levels: gay, very gay and Clay Aiken."

Was wondering when he'd come out finally. This is no big suprise. He really didn't even have to come out. Everyone already knew.

Ok. i'm wiping major egg off my face right now. i was one of the few who fully believed his denials. i thought he was quirky, but was sure if he was gay he woulda said so from the get go. and so for years i vigorously defended him- every scandal and accusation. i think i can resign my claymate banners. the man i thought he was would not have mislead his fans for 6 years. i feel like such a
