LOS ANGELES, Calif. (October 18, 2007) - Chris Pine is going where only William Shatner has gone before.

Pine, the hot Hollywood up-and-comer, has closed his deal to star as the young Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pine (whose screen credits include "Smokin' Aces" and "Just My Luck") had long been rumored to be joining the cast, but has finally signed on the bottom line.

He joins the previously announced Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Anton Yelchin (Chekov), Eric Bana (the villain, Nero) and Zachary Quinto (who most know as the evil Sylar from "Heroes") as a young Spock.

It was also announced on Thursday that Karl Urban (who played Eomer in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy ) has been cast as USS Enterprise medical officer "Bones" McCoy.

Although plot details are being kept under wraps, it's believed the film will follow the early days of the Enterprise crew.

Earlier this month, before Pine was confirmed, Zachary Quinto spoke with Access Hollywood about the idea of the 27-year-old actor playing Captain Kirk.

"I know Chris," Quinto said. "I think he is a phenomenal actor. I would certainly love to work with him and I feel like he would be a really strong choice."

Filming on "Star Trek" is scheduled to begin in November.

Boo hoo Ken K. Sucks to be you. Of course the captain is a white male, so was the creator. That Roddenberry, why didn't he have himself altered to be more politically correct? Racist bastard! Sometimes the hero is a white male with a giant multicultural cast and a green-blooded alien. That's just the way it goes sometimes. Oh and if they don't put Kirk in there somehow, then they suck.

Crap crap crap. This will be another big-bucks bomb. The Trek Community will not bother with it, because yet AGAIN, Paramount execs did NOT listen to what the fans were telling them. No one WANTS a re-imagining. They want to see adventures of the characters they know and love, in the universe that Roddenberry established. Not something that Abrams perverted as he did Mission Impossible.

This isn't some Lucas-style "prequel"... this is a reinvention of the series, an attempt to restart a once-great franchise. Much like was done (very successfully) with Batman, they took what once made money, reinvented it with a newer, younger cast, and went back to the beginning. If it hits big, expect to see a whole string of movies featuring the young, reinvented crew of the Enterprise.
