Chelsea Handler Doesn't Regret Having an Abortion at Age 16

Not everything in Chelsea Handler's life is a laughing matter.

While appearing on The Rosie Show, the 36-year-old TV host revealed she got pregnant when she was just 16 years old -- and she was determined to keep the child.

"I was so delusional," Handler said Wednesday. "I was like, 'I'm ready for a baby.'"

The New Jersey native's parents, Rita and Seymour, had different plans for their daughter. "You're throwing your entire life away," they told her. "You're supposed to create a life for yourself. We want you to enjoy your life and not be raising a child, and we're certainly not going to raise it for you."

Host Rosie O'Donnell sympathized with Handler, arguing that for some women, having an abortion isn't "a life-defining negative thing."

Twenty years later, Handler said she has "no regrets" about her decision. "I wouldn't be a good mother," the bestselling author said. "You should do whatever you want with your body and you shouldn't let anyone tell you what to do."

I do not believe in judging her for this decision. She was a young girl and that is between her and her parent. I do judge her for making this public information. This is a private matter and should remain private. I am sick and tired of celebrities trying to push there own social and political agendas.

Fine, so she wouldn't have been a good mother.....what about another woman who desperately wanted what she had??? And as far as her saying "you should do whatever you want with your body"....what about what the baby wanted for his or her body. Having his/her brain sucked out or body ripped to pieces was probably NOT what it had in mind. I am pregnant now, and have two at home...I don't know how WOMEN who have actually been pregnant can say that what is inside of them is ANYTHING BUT ALIVE AND FEELING!!!

its not.. its just a bunch of cells... medical fact up to a certain point.. actually you are nothing but a bunch of cells... just animated till the lights go out..

At that point you are only pretty much stem cells (cells waiting to form into organs and everything else that makes up the body). It takes up to 6 weeks for a heartbeat to be heard and even then a fetus cannot think for itself. Even when the child is born it doesn't have any idea as to what it is or what it's purpose is or what it wants in life. Sure, they have the basic instincts for survival (food, warmth, etc) but it'll be a couple years before it can start really thinking for itself and seeing itself as a unique individual. To say that a fetus or newborn child is a "person" is wildly incorrect.
And don't even try the "another woman would have loved that baby" stuff. Do you realize how many millions (billions probably) of children there are that aren't being properly taken care of. How many kids are in the foster system and could use a good family? It's not worth it to bring more life into this world when we aren't can't take care of the people living now. We certainly aren't about to go extinct any time soon...

Nicci we see what your views are on abortion but did you really have to get into the religious and political view of it? Bela and Lindsey you are right at that point the baby is just stem cells waiting to differentiate.

No matter what, people will get abortions whether it is legal or not. Abortion has been going on for thousands of years. Her parents didn't believe she was ready, which in turn got her back to reality. Her decision wasn't yours, so why make such a big deal over it?

If I decided to kill you and everyone got mad about it, could I argue that it was my decision and why should anyone else make a big deal about it?

Abortion is a huge massive expansive deal sweety

An embryo or fetus up to the 3 month mark cannot survive on it's own outside of the mother's body. Most abortions are performed before even the 9th week of pregnancy. It's completely different from killing someone who is fully capable of surviving in the world on their own. Whenever I hear someone say "What if I killed you" I just have to laugh. Would I have an abortion? Probably not, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be another woman's choice to do with her body what she chooses.

IM not even going to judge this( we all have skeletons)... Its in the past and its between her and God. Although Im a little confused as to it being her body and doing what she wanted when her parents insisted she have the abortion... thats a little odd.. anyways, the only thing I do think is some things you just keep to yourself. Im a very transparent person also but even I think some things you just keep to yourself and God. I dont care for her as a comedian but as a woman and fellow human being I pray she truly is ok with her decision and God bless her.

True, it did sound as if her parents wanted it more.. but if my 16-year-old was pregnant, I would likely be the deciding vote as well.

My daughter got pregnant in her senior year of high school. Not once did it occur to us to abort him. We didn't hide, we didn't act ashamed. Today that beautiful precious life is the absolute light of our lives! The thought of him ending up in a trash can is abhorrent!
Seems strange to me they never considered adoption. Had they done so, Chelsea could have the memory of blessing an infertile couple with a much wanted baby to cherish. Could it be the real motive behind an abortion was so her parents could save face in the community?

It is a woman's right to choose. That being said, I am shocked that not one person whose posts I have read mentioned birth control. WHY are kids still having sex without birth control? Frankly it takes two pretty stupid ppl to take that chance, and even girls on the pill can get STDs without condoms. Wise up ppl. Sure it's your right to decide to abort but wouldn't it be much less grueling to just prevent the situation to begin with?

Most abortions occur when the fetus is hardly a fetus at all. Usually it's in the first trimester and all that's in the uterus is a small cluster of undifferentiated cells. From a political stand point it would be unethical to make abortions illegal for soooo many reasons. I know it is unfortunate that abortions have to happen but they fact of the matter is they do. Not every pregnancy will be a success whether the abortion is spontaneous (miscarriage) or induced, they will ALWAYS happen. Let's at least allow the pregnant women a safe place to have these procedures done by doctors and certified medical staff.

I think chelsea with a kid at her age now is scary, i cant imagine her at 16 with a baby. I understand it was her decision, but maybe she could have looked into the adoption thing, its obvious she is far too selfish to carry and raise a child and this is now... at 16 she would have killed a baby im sure. she seems completely irresponsible now so....

she should've waited until she knew if gwyneth paltrow would've bought a $880 stroller for the kid.

I'm sad that Chelsea and her parents apparently didn't explore adoption alternatives. For many (not all), adoption is a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Abortion is such a controversial topic. I feel that a woman should have a right to choose but some women take it to an extreme as using abortion as a means for birth control. I wouldn't know what to do if put in a situation like that but I do believe that every woman should have that option available to them. Adoption on the other hand is a great alternative to abortion!

Not your bodies people. You have no right to say what a woman can or cannot do with her own body. It's pretty black and white. Just like denying gays the right to marry. Who are you to say what they can or cannot do? You tried to deny blacks from sitting where they wanted to on a bus and denying interracial marriages. Really? How did that work out for you? ROFLMAO
