Chelsea Clinton has made her journalistic debut on NBC's "Rock Center With Brian Williams."
Chelsea's first report was about a woman from Pine Bluff, Arkansas who was giving back to her community. This woman, Annette Dove, was helping disadvantaged children in the area by offering free meals, tutoring, and cultural enrichment through her organization, TOPPS (Targeting Other People's Priorities With Service).
The former First Daughter's career seems to be following a similar trajectory to Jenna Bush Hager who joined the "Today" show as a correspondent in 2009.
Jenna and Chelsea seem to cover similar topics about everyday people who are making a difference. In March 2011, Jenna gave a report on a family called the Twietmeyers who had adopted children with HIV and were spreading awareness of the importance of HIV adoption.
Jenna is camera-friendly because of her all-American girl-next-door looks. Chelsea was an awkward teenager but grew up to be a poised and elegant lady.
Chelsea is at a bit of a disadvantage because her personality is more reserved, and she isn't as used to being in the spotlight. She doesn't seem to have her father, Bill Clinton's, charm and ease in public speaking. However, that could change with experience.
Jenna is obviously much more comfortable on television. She's bubbly, extroverted, and outgoing. She also has a lot of passion for her subject matter (education) and it shows.
Both ladies are likable in different ways. Although Chelsea is inexperienced in front of the camera, she comes across as a genuine person. She really seemed to care about her subject matter and the people she was interviewing. Chelsea comes across as someone who could grow on you with time.
If Chelsea is the earnest bookworm type, then Jenna is the girl who makes friends easily and is the life of every party.
For now, I have to say that Jenna has performed better in her reporting stints, but Chelsea just started, so she has plenty of time to improve.
