As is usually happens every year, there were more than a few divorces among celebrities in 2011. Some were not so surprising, and probably could have been easily predicted at the start of the year, but others were a lot more shocking. Here is a look at three of the most surprising splits in Tinsel Town.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver
The former governor of California and Kennedy heiress, Maria Shriver, announced their separation in May after 25 years of marriage. Shriver's cheating husband, who is also said to be one of the worst governors in his state's history, admitted a long time affair with the couple's former housekeeper. The affair also produced a love child, a son who was born within a week of Schwarzenegger's youngest child with Shriver.
The marriage seemed to unravel quickly, with the couple announcing their separation in early May. Shortly after, Schwarzenegger revealed that he fathered the illegitimate child. In July, Shriver filed divorce papers.
The former television journalist put her career on hold to support her husband's political aspirations, and in 2003, she stuck by the man even after several women accused him of wanton behavior. But even Shriver has a breaking point, and after a quarter century of putting up with her husband's shenanigans she finally called it quits.
The beautiful actress Scarlett Johansson and her actor husband Ryan Reynolds showed no signs marriage difficulties, keeping their personal life mostly to themselves. They were married for only two years, and a judge finalized their divorce just this summer.
The couple even produced a movie together, "The Whale," earlier this year, and this fall, nude pictures Johansson had sent to her husband over her cell phone were leaked for everyone to see. It seemed that they had a truly happy marriage, and we're not sure what led to their abrupt split.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony
While perhaps we should have known better, with the pop singer's previous relationship track record, that the marriage between Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony would not last. But after seven years of what seemed to be wedded bliss, their split was more than a little shocking to many of us.
Just weeks before the announcement of her divorce in mid-July, the diva told Latina magazine, "You know, we respect each other, we respect each other's opinions, and we love each other, more than anything. And I believe in destiny and I believe that things are going to be what they're gonna be and for whatever reason, we were meant to share this time together."
In typical Lopez style, she has already moved on from the relationship with her third husband, and on to 24-year-old dancer, Casper Smart.
