While Rick and Kate's relationship is what drives Castle, those two hearts aren't the only ones on the line this season as Lanie and Esposito's rocky relationship comes back into focus over the coming weeks.
But is there room for two happy couples in Castle-land? That was the question I posed to Tamala Jones when we chatted earlier this week about this relationship resurrection, what fans can expect this season and her cinematic contribution to my childhood!
TheInsider.com: What was it like reading the premiere script and seeing how fully the show was going there with Castle & Beckett?
Tamala Jones: I was like, "Finally! God! I've been waiting." I just started clapping when I read the script ... and I was home alone! [laughs] To see it play out was even better -- but wait until you see what's coming this season. It's really cool the way the writers set it up. It's going to be like you're on an adventure; like you're in the relationship with them the way they've written it. Nathan and Stana are killing it. They are on fire now!
Insider.com: Rick & Kate are trying to keep the relationship secret, but does Lanie catch on?
Tamala: There's a scene in the second episode where it appears Lanie knows something because she sees a glow on Kate's face -- and girlfriends know when their friends are having sex, so she knows there's something different. I don't want to ruin the scene, but it's such a fun moment in the morgue where they're almost busted -- by themselves! They're about to out their relationship even though Lanie doesn’t know anything!
Insider.com: What about Lanie's love life? Is there hope for Javier?
Tamala: My backstory with Lanie is that she was so hurt in childhood that men have always been a problem for her. She is in love with Javi, but she is afraid. She knows he's a player. I mean, the man flirts with everybody and she knows that – Lanie tries to keep her distance, but in season five you'll see some new on-screen fire between the characters. I don't think you've seen the end of them at all!
Insider.com: What's your favorite episode, so far, from this season?
Tamala: Oh my God, the death in episode 4 is crazy! It involves a rock group and it's the first time you'll see all the characters having to play to the camera [because] it's a rock documentary. As actors you're taught not to look at the camera, so we're all freaked out.
Insider.com: Switching gears for a second, last night I stumbled upon Can't Hardly Wait on HBO -- did you think that would be a movie with such staying power?
Tamala: I was just happy to get a job [laughs]. The best part about that job for me is that most of the actors – Seth Green, Jaime Pressly, Bobby Jacoby – all went to the same acting class. We booked the movie at the same time, so it was like one big party. We had no idea it would actually turn out to be as lasting as it has. I'm a huge John Hughes fan, I watched everything he did, so when I saw that this was an all-teen movie, I felt like we could do our own John Hughes movie. And that was the writer's idea too. I'm glad to see people feel like we succeeded.
Castle airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
