Bret Michaels may have two distinct sets of fans, but today, his ex-fiance Kristi Gibson may not be among them. The singer has called off his engagement to the mother of his children. Original Michaels fans appreciate the rocker's roots in the group Poison. The lead vocalist of the glam metal band belted out a stream of hits including "Every Rose Has It's Thorn." Michaels' second group of fans come from his reality show stints.
In his VH1 glory days, Bret built upon the quirky "Flavor of Love" franchise. The self-proclaimed rock god starred in the series "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels." Viewers tuned in to every spin-off of the show to watch Bret "dating" a bevy of groupies. The singer was in full ladies man mode.
Bret then cemented his rocker with a heart of gold status when he shared his health issues with fans. Seeing a hard core musical artist talk openly about life with diabetes helped remove stigmas and taboos. Michaels often told the young women competing on-air to be his "girl" that they might be required to rescue him when his health failed.
One woman was definitely waiting in the wings to take care of Bret. Kristi, mother of Raine Elizabeth, 12, and Jorja Bleu, 7, starred in "Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It" in 2010. True to his reality roots, Michaels proposed to Gibson on-air. It was an interesting time for the musician. He also competed and won Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" in 2010 despite his health challenges. Michaels suffered a near fatal brain hemorrhage.
Bret may be a winner in music and TV, but love seems a bit harder. We recommend Bret taking time to reflect, console himself and strengthen his relationship with his kids. After all, this breakup has to be devastating to them as well. Bret and Kristi have released the standard celeb breakup statement to the media: "Although the couple have separated they remain great friends and are committed to jointly raising their two daughters."
So, when the time is right, who should the Poison singer date next? Bret needs a woman who doesn't mind his time on the road and may even want to rock along for the ride. Unfortunately for Bret, fun-loving Megan Fox is taken -- and pregnant. Avril Lavigne is on the young side but she's newly single. Old school Nicole Richie would have been great as well.
So, what do you think? Who should Bret Michaels date next? Should he have broken off his engagement?
