Bradley Cooper got sober after ‘deliberately’ bashing head on concrete floor

Bradley Cooper is probably best known for the big laughs he got in “The Hangover,” “Wedding Crashers,” and “The A-Team,” but before he found success on the big screen, he was caught up in a rabbit hole of drugs and alcohol. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote his new drama, “The Words,” 37-year-old Cooper reveals he got sober when he was 29. "I don't drink or do drugs anymore. Being sober helps a great deal … I remember looking at my life, my apartment, my dogs [when I was still using], and I thought, 'What's happening?’”

One of the crazy moments that helped him make the decision to live a healthier lifestyle was when, under the influence at a party, he “deliberately bashed my head on the concrete floor,” says Cooper. “Like, 'Hey, look how tough I am!’” Although his head was dripping blood, “I did it again,” he adds. “[And] I spent the night at [New York City’s] St. Vincent's Hospital with a sock of ice, waiting for them to stitch me up."

Cooper, who had a brief 4-month marriage to actress Jennifer Esposito in 2007, tells the magazine that he abused alcohol and drugs because he wasn’t comfortable with himself. "I was so concerned what you thought of me, how I was coming across, how I would survive the day," he says. "I always felt like an outsider. I just lived in my head. I realized I wasn't going to live up to my potential, and that scared the hell out of me. I thought, 'Wow, I'm actually gonna ruin my life. I'm really gonna ruin it.’"

Fortunately, he wised up before that could happen.
