2012 will go down as a year to remember for Beyonce. It started off with a bang when she and her husband Jay-Z welcomed their baby daughter Blue Ivy to the world. Now the 30-year-old singer has even more reason to celebrate. People Magazine has named her this year's Most Beautiful Woman. Commenting on being given the honor, Knowles said " I feel more beautiful than I've ever felt because I've given birth. I have never felt so connected, never felt like I had such a purpose on this Earth."
People has been crowning a Most Beautiful person every year since 1990. That year it was the bombshell Michelle Pfeiffer who was on the cover. In each year's Beautiful People issue one hundred celebrities are chosen, and the winner is put on the cover. We thought we'd take a look at some of the notable winners of previous years.
Beautiful Men - It's not always a woman who is awarded the title Most Beautiful. Though his personal woes would probably keep him out of the running now, it was Mel Gibson in 1996 who was the first man to be honored in this way. The next two years saw two more titans of Tinseltown get the nod. Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio won in 1997 and 1998 respectively, and were the last men to have won the prize thus far. Surprisingly, neither Brad Pitt nor George Clooney have been Most Beautiful.
People Really Likes Julia Roberts - No one has won the honor more than the veteran actress. In four different years Robert's has been on the cover. Her first win was in 1991 in the wake of "Pretty Woman," the film that catapulted her career into the stratosphere. Her most recent win was in 2010.
Does Being An Oscar Winner Increase Your Chances? - You could certainly make the case for it being true. Quite a few Academy Award winners have graced the cover. Roberts of course, but also Jodie Foster and her "Maverick" co-star and Mel Gibson have won the honor. Then there was a three year run of consecutive Oscar winning actresses. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Nicole Kidman and Halle Berry all won the Most Beautiful award for 2001, 2002 and 2003 respectively.
Most Beautiful "Friends" - Two co-stars of the long-running NBC comedy were named to the top honor. In 1995 it was Courteney Cox who won. "Friends" had debuted just a few months prior and at the time she was the biggest star on the show. In 2004, as the show was going off the air, it was Jennifer Aniston who had shot to super-stardom and won the award.
