Beyonce Mourns the Loss of "Eternally Great" Etta James

As the music world mourns the Friday loss of 73-year-old Etta James, singer Beyonce -- who portrayed James in 2008's Cadillac Records -- is among the first to offer her condolences.

"This is a huge loss. Etta James was one of the greatest vocalists of our time," the new mom, who welcomed Blue Ivy with husband Jay-Z January 7, wrote on her website Friday, just hours after news of James' passing broke.

In her touching blog post, Beyonce also reflected on her role as James in Cadillac Records.

"Playing Etta James taught me so much about myself, and singing her music inspired me to be a stronger artist," Beyonce said. "When she effortlessly opened her mouth, you could hear her pain and triumph. Her deeply emotional way of delivering a song told her story with no filter."

Declared Beyonce, who called the "At Last" crooner 'eternally great": "She was fearless, and had guts. She will be missed."

Losing her battle with terminal leukemia Friday at Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, Calif., James was surrounded by her husband and two sons at the time of her passing.

"This is a tremendous loss for the family, her friends and fans around the world," her friend and manager Lupe De Leon said of James, who would have turned 74 Wednesday. "She was a true original who could sing it all -- her music defied category."

Tell Mr. Jones that I too mourn the loss of Etta James, the first time I heard her was when a commercial came on and they used her song "At Last" I think it was an automobile commercial, but I fell in love with that song and went out and bought her greatest hits, my father loved her too may they both rest in peace.

CLEARLY: THE FACT THAT ETTA DIDN'T LIKE BEYONCE' DID THAT MAKE HER A HATER TOO? Just because a person doesn't like someone doesn't make them a hater, just becausse someone dislikes a person that you obviously DO like doesn't make them a hater for having a difference opinion from YOU. We all dislike people for various reasons, and I doubt Etta was jealous of Beyonce' which is what the term "Hater" implies.

very well said, some adults obviously dont know the definition of the word. People have their own opinions, and not everyone will agree, this does NOT make someone a hater.

Here's the glaring omission. It was public knowledge for at least a year that Etta James's family struggled with the cost of her medical care and almost depleted her estate paying for it. Where was Beyonce (who spent millions on a private hospital suite for her newborn daughter), Adele, Rhianna, et al? These artists were too busy spending the money they made riding on Etta James's shoulders on frivolous nonsense to even think about a tribute concert which might raise money to help her in her time of greatest need.

Another thing - this story has quickly fallen off the main entertainment page. Etta James was a pioneer, but her personal history will forever relegate her to the last page. She was ripped off her whole life. She never asked to be rich, but she did want recognition - something which didn't really come until she died. And even then, not befitting an artist of her creative stature.

Wow ....I didnt know all that

Okay but was anyone forcing Etta James to abuse drugs? And was anyone forcing her to spend her money like crazy when she was making it? Sure it's easy to blame new artists for not making a fund raiser but if Etta James were to have spent it wisely this would not have been an issue.

Beyonce, you could've have learned how to actually sing well from Etta James. Whenever you sing, it sounds like brakes screeching or fingernails scraping a chalkboard. You, Blue Ivy and Jay-Z should go away, far far away.

Why make it all about Beyonce? I'm pretty sure Etta's family is mourning her loss more than someone who played her in a movie.

Why is that spoiled fake pregnancy Beyonce even mentioned here the spoiled brat wont even let Etta be the star of her own death. Beyonce go back and watch your nannies change a diaper

Etta James passed, on of the greatest singers of our time. Why would ANYONE be interested in how Beyonce is dealing with it? I honestly don't care. Why is she in an article about Etta Jame's passing? And to everyone saying that Beyonce is "classy": Beyonce wouldn't know class if it hit her with a hammer. Etta James, she had class. RIP.

When her "Dreamgirl" costar loss her mother, brother and nephew to senseless violence, I did not see any statement of sadness or mourning for Jennifer Hudson. Beyonce please stop trying to stay press worthy-you are not, no one cares that you mourn the loss of Etta James, in fact I for one couldn't care less how you feel.
