WASHINGTON, DC -- As President Elect Barack Obama lead by example by painting walls at the Sasha Bruce House on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day morning before his Inauguration, several big celebs and civic leaders gathered early at Ballou Senior High School in Washington DC's Anacostia neighborhood to call for a "New Era Of Service" lead by ServiceNation.

Toby Maguire announced the launch of a ServiceNation Ambassador's Council that will seek to recruit Hollywood stars to speak out for and enlist folks in national service.

Meanwhile, Ashton Kutcher & Demi Moore were on hand to introduce a video they created, "The Presidential Pledge," in which several of their Hollywood friends committed themselves to a renewed pledge to public service and civic duty.

Lisa Paulsen, President & CEO of the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF), was present to announce that EIF would be working with ServiceNation going forward to galvanize the entertainment world to mobilize Americans to volunteer and serve.

fembot - apparently volunteerism is only hip when the stars are bragging about what they do. Don't ya know thats the only time some Americans will get up off their butts and do something for someone other than themselves. After all this is the culture that lets hollywood make decisions for them. Somehow these people forget when our former President asked us to help the community- who s

LaLaLu- it only cost Bush 40 million for his last inauguration and he was criticised for that because the was a sunami and a war going on at the time - now we have an economy that is spiraling out of control because Americans can't live on a budget (hollywood and the government especially) and they're throwing a party that cost around 170 million how many Katrina homes could that

Wow, NOW they care? NOW they're Americans? Why, because of King Obama? I guess 9/11 didn't register on their radar since they didn't lose a loved one. I guess the wars didn't matter because it wasn't their family member dodging bullets & bombs. Selfish, self-centered %@!*#s. Thank you G. W. Bush for keeping me and my family safe for SEVEN YEARS. What's really funny though is that this article isn't really even about our future President. And the fact is everyone...if a celebrity ISN'T photographed or heard of doing anything none of you would even know/believe it. Celebrities don't have to tell anyone every time they donate (more money than most of us will ever make) or help out disasters like Katrina, Bush

So all of you complaining about the estimated cost of the inauguration need to realize that the main expense is for SECURITY!! Not the Obama's wardrobe. It costs a lot for a whole city to basically shutdown, people. None of you Mcainanites would be complaining if it was your grampa who was getting sworn in. Please grow up and leave the nonsensical babbling to the babies.

I have no time to volunteer, but I give what I can to various charities. If all of the Hollywood "celebrities" gave some of their ridiculous incomes and time to charities, those of us hardworking Americans wouldn't be asked to do it for them.

"Celebrities" have no clue what is going on in the real world. I'm sick of listening to them preach how "together" we can make the world a better pace. I'd like to know when they really volunteer for anything other than when it's for a photo op. Their parties, shopping, and over-priced salaries are their top priorities. Most of us mus

go away dancer... The world celebrated?? The entire world celebrated? The entire world did not celebrate.. While yes this is historic he is just a man and pinning all our hopes on him like he is Jesus Christ is wrong cause only one man can save this world and it isn't Obama..
