Ditching Hollywood for a more rustic region of the state, Anne Hathaway became the latest movie star to hold her wedding in Northern California. The "Dark Knight Rises" actress married long-time beau Adam Shulman on the rugged coast town of Big Sur Saturday night.
Instead of getting hitched at a posh hotel, the brown-haired beauty and her new jewelry designer husband said their "I do's" at a private estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Having a Northern California wedding is a trend that many Hollywood stars are beginning to follow. Until recently, it was de rigueur for celebs to plan a glamorous destination wedding outside of the United States. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got married in an Italian castle; Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner at a resort in Turks and Caicos; and Salma Hayek and billionaire boyfriend François-Henri Pinaulthey made it official in Paris and had a second wedding in Venice the same year.
Weddings held in the Southern United States have also become a hot trend, with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively drawling their vows at a plantation near Charleston, South Carolina, last month -- even though neither half of the couple hailed from Dixie.
But for sheer convenience and natural beauty, Northern California has become hard to beat as a celebrity wedding site. With its romantic coastline, lush vineyards and scenic Sierras, the less Hollywood half of the Golden State has won over many celebrities seeking a magical place to get married.
Robin Williams married his third wife Susan Schneider at the Meadowood Resort in Napa Valley among the merlot grapes. The former Mork waited until his honeymoon to hop on a plane to Paris with his new bride.
"Clueless" Alicia Silverstone knew what she was doing when she walked down the aisle barefoot in Lake Tahoe, California, nestled deep in the Sierra Mountain range. Lucky guests lobbed lavender and other flowers at her and groom Christopher Jarecki to the tune of John Lennon's "Imagine."
And the Force was with "Robot Chicken's" Seth Green and his model/actress fiancée Clare Grant when the two got married in Marin County at the Skywalker Ranch. The estate belongs to "Star Wars" producer George Lucas who attended the wedding, along with comic lyricist "Weird Al" Yancovic.
