Anne Hathaway's amazing awards season will come to an end on Sunday at the Oscars, and it hasn't been an easy journey for the actress. She's had no problem defeating her talented competition all season long, but she's faced much fiercer foes than Sally Field and Helen Hunt -- her gorgeous gowns seem like they're all out to get her.
Anne's season of wardrobe malfunctions started back in December at the NYC premiere of her movie "Les Miserables." As she was stepping out of a car in a dress with a dangerously high slit, a sneaky paparazzo snapped an up-skirt shot of the actress. Unfortunately, Anne wasn't wearing any underwear.
She later dubbed the incident "devastating," and according to "Access Hollywood," she made this speech about it during a "Today" show appearance: "I'm sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies sexuality of unwilling participants, which brings us back to 'Les Mis,' that's what my character is, she is someone who is forced to sell sex to benefit her child because she has nothing and there's no social safety net."
Comparing being a rich and successful actress who opts out of wearing underwear underneath a designer gown to being a poor prostitute at death's door seems a little ridiculous, so it's a good thing Anne has since learned to laugh about the incident. Tuesday night her "Les Mis" costar Russell Crowe presented her with yet another trophy at the Costume Designer Guild Awards, and he couldn't resist making a crack about the actress wanting to be a nun when she was younger. He quipped, "Isn't that lovely? Then she found out they actually require you to wear underpants when they go out at night." Anne had a good giggle at her own expense.
Perhaps Anne Hathaway should consider dressing like a nun at the Oscars, because she's having a terrible time avoiding wardrobe malfunctions. While attending the Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 10, the strap on her dress broke. Luckily, her "Dark Knight Rises" co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt was able to save the day by providing a pin for a makeshift repair, proving that you don't need a mask and cape to be a hero.
At the Jan. 27 SAG Awards, Anne almost suffered another fashion fail when she donned a dress with a "funky little zipper." According to USA Today, here's what she said about her malfunctioning gown: "We almost had a full-blown disaster on our hands." But her dress stayed put while she accepted yet another award.
She wasn't as lucky at the Feb. 10 BAFTA awards -- her dress got torn before the show. Anne later joked to Jay Leno that she looked like a "turkey" after her stylist attempted to stitch the damaged gown back together, so she had to ditch it for a different one. Her dress disaster made her late for the show, so she had to rush down the red carpet and got booed by angry fans. However, her night ended on a high note when she got a hug from George Clooney and snagged another statuette for her collection.
So even though Jennifer Lawrence had part of her gown appear to fall down at the SAG Awards, we're going to vote Anne as the actress most likely to suffer a wardrobe malfunction at the Oscars. However, she shouldn't fret about her frock too much since she keeps winning awards -- wardrobe malfunctions seem to be good luck for Anne, so maybe she should even consider damaging her dress on purpose at the Oscars. She just needs to stuff her purse with some safety pins and double-sided tape just in case she goes a little too far.
