Talk about a tease!
Fast forward to Thursday night's results show. Ryan started things off with: "In just a bit, I will announce some shocking news that will affect the judges and turn the competition upside down."
Wow, this must be something! So what was the shocking twist?
Let's just say Ryan went through all the motions, boasted about this week's 38 million votes (which add up quickly when viewers can supervote 50 votes at a time), and then in the final five minute of the show, called out the bottom two: Amber Holcomb and Candice Glover.
Then he gave us the twist: No one was going home.
Yeah, this week's "twist" lacked the punch of, say, a real twist because it wasn't really much of a twist at all. With the judges forfeiting their one and only Save this season, it left an extra week in the "Idol" schedule. So what else to do but delay the Top 4 elimination another week? Fans had been speculating about it since last week's elimination of Janelle Arthur, when the judges let their Save expire.
But don't worry, folks, all that supervoting won't go to waste. Next week's votes will be combined with this week's votes to determine who will go home. And even though they're technically "behind" right now, it almost seems as though Amber and Candice will have an edge next week, because their fans know one of them would have been doomed this week, so they'll put their supervoting into high gear.
Basically, this week's "twist" was actually just the Judges' Save without actually using the Judges' Save. At the very least, it would have been nice if Ryan had revealed who would have gone home, since we voted and all. It was a weak, anticlimactic end to a lackluster performance week that wasn't all that interesting to begin with.
Now that's not to say there shouldn't have been a twist. With an extra week to fill, the show had to get creative. And while it would have been equally unfair if they had done something really twisty -- like bring back an ousted contestant this late in the game -- the bottom line is this: If anyone but Amber or Candice goes home next week, then it really doesn't reflect what the viewers voted for this week.
So next week, it's a Top 4 redo for Amber Holcomb, Candice Glover, Angie Miller, and Kree Harrison. The theme: Then and Now. Seems like we've been there, done that.
The next episode of "American Idol" airs on Wednesday at 8/7c on FOX.
