"American Idol" fans already know that it's unlikely that Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey will be back on the show next season. The drama between the dueling divas has overshadowed the once-top rated TV talent show, with Nicki taking the disrespect to a whole new level when she pulled out a Q-tip to clean out Mariah's ears last week.
That said, there is no doubt that next season's judges' table will look very different for Season 13. Ratings for the 12th season of the show are way down, and "American Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has gone on record saying the judges' lack of chemistry is to blame for this season's declining ratings.
A source for Radar Online reports that the current lineup of judges -- Nicki, Mariah, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson -- may be obliterated, and that host Ryan Seacrest is the only current cast member who has job security.
According to the Radar source: "There's more drama going on behind the scenes of the show than on the stage, and that's why there's a major overhaul in the works… That's why they want to go big next season, and you can't get any bigger than Justin Bieber. The executives are calling it their dream team because who wouldn't tune in to see Justin and Selena, Pink and Diddy? Pink has been approached in the past and turned it down as well as Diddy, who wanted too much money. It will cost a fortune to get them, but the show has gotten so stale that Fox is desperate for a revamp - they're willing to pay to put 'Idol' back on top."
Rumors recently surfaced that the "Idol" powers-that-be frantically tried to pull off a mid-season replacement of their $18 million catch, Mariah Carey, with former judge Jennifer Lopez, but it never came to fruition. But J-Lo will be back for the show's finale next week to perform her new single, "Live It Up." According to Deadline, Fox is still pursuing J-Lo for next season's judges' panel as well.
While Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez are presumably at the height of their careers right now -- Gomez, especially, has been juggling a mix of music and acting projects -- it seems unlikely that they'd actually bite at the "Idol" bait. Still, other TV talent shows have reeled in some big fish: Pop star Demi Lovato was seduced by Simon Cowell's show, "The X Factor," while Bieber's mentor, Usher, is currently a judge on "The Voice."
The "American Idol" Season 12 finale airs on May 16 on Fox.
