Actress Danai Gurira, who appeared in HBO's "Treme," has been cast as the Michonne, the fan favorite role from the graphic novels.

The Michonne is a skilled sword-wielding woman, who walks around with multiple zombies chained to her.

She appeared hooded in Sunday's season finale, saving one of the gang from a zombie attack.

When Access Hollywood asked in January, at the Television Critics Association Winter Session panel, about an online rumor that an extra for the show had claimed the character would appear in the coming episodes, Robert Kirkman, the creator and show executive producer, said they were hoping to add the strong, female character in.

"I can definitely say that that's not confirmed. I don't know who that extra was. I don't know if they were definitely part of the show. I can say, you know, that's a character that we definitely want to work into the show at some point in the future," Kirkman said at the time.
