Actor Alec Baldwin's self-imposed Twitter time-out has been lifted. In the wake of his recent showdown with American Airlines, Baldwin had turned away from the social networking site. The dust up with American was over an incident in which the "30 Rock" star was kicked off a flight from Los Angeles International Airport after he refused to turn off his smartphone.
There were some conflicting details in the airline's story and that of Alec, but the basic facts lined up and after tweeting a few blasts at American's expense the airline responded on their Facebook page. Ultimately, Baldwin apologized to the other passengers in an op-ed piece on The Huffington Post's website. Baldwin is an established veteran of show business, and it would seem that this most recent drama is behind him.
We look back now on five of Alec's best performances in motion pictures.
"The Departed" (2006) Baldwin's role was smaller than some of his larger starring parts, but his performance as Captain Ellerby was memorable, and believable. Alec has the ability to exude and personify confidence whether it be subtle or much more out in the open, as it was in this film which also starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg.
"Outside Providence" (1999) - It's a little-known coming of age comedy from the late 1990s, but one of the lone bright spots of the film is Baldwin's performance as Old Man Dunphy, the lead characters father. In the film, Baldwin's character is somehow simultaneously revolting and old fashioned and sweet and progressive. It was the first time in a long while where Baldwin's comedic timing and sensibility was center stage.
"Glengarry Glen Ross" (1992) - In this film, adapted by David Mamet from one of his plays, Baldwin plays a member of a high-powered real estate firm. The film is an intense "talking head" kind of picture with quick-witted dialogue and memorable performances not just from Baldwin as Blake, but from Kevin Spacey, Al Pacino and Jack Lemmon as well.
"The Hunt for Red October" (1990) - Baldwin as actually the first actor to play author Tom Clancy's iconic character Jack Ryan in a film. Starring opposite Sean Connery as a Russian nuclear submarine captain, Baldwin's performance was not only believable, it was just as good as Harrison Ford's portrayal of the same character in two subsequent films. (We won't even get into Ben Affleck's version of Jack Ryan)
"Beetlejuice" (1988) - When Alec signed on to do "30 Rock" many were shocked because at that time he wasn't exactly known for his comedic roles, with the exception of a few. But anyone who'd seen this Tim Burton classic that starred Alec, Michael Keaton as the titular character, and Gina Davis knew he was quite skilled with the funny stuff.
