Actress clarifies remark about being gay by choice

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Actress Cynthia Nixon is trying to clarify her earlier remarks that got her in hot water with some fellow gay rights activists.

The "Sex and the City" star's personal life became an exercise in the politics of sexual orientation last week when The New York Times Magazine quoted Nixon saying that for her, being gay was a conscious choice. Nixon has been in a relationship with a woman for eight years. Before that, she spent 15 years and had two children with a man.

After some gay rights activists complained that Nixon's remarks could be used to deny a biological basis for homosexuality, the actress on Monday released a statement to The Advocate magazine explaining she is technically bisexual, and not by choice.

Nixon told the magazine: "What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship."

Wow.... I'm gay and I'm OFFENDED by the GAY RIGHTS ACTIVISTS! Get over yourself. The woman made a comment about herself and her sexuality. So I guess you can't even make comments about YOU anymore without someone telling you you said it wrong.....

what she said was circumspect at best. She stated that she chose be lesbian which is more than just who you choose to sleep with but is about the sexual desires you have.

it was her choice. she says it. leave her alone. you cant tell people how to be gay. first you idiots try to make me agree with it. never happen. then when someone doesnt fit your style of being gay, she gets trashed. and you think that is ok? this is why noone listens to you. the dr's will agree with the born this way crap so they dont lose all the patients. you freaks make up most of the mental ilness patients anyway. you try to find someone that agrees with you and then i am told the medical feild backs yo up. what about mrs nixon. that is her life, but out you pervert

In the year 2012 your outdated, cliched backward rhetoric makes you sound very ignorant Libs. Time to get the old head out of the #$%$ perhaps?

Seems to me that America's #1 leisure activity has become being offended.
And the second most popular activity seems to be loudly demanding tolerance from others and then refusing to show any in your own life. To me, this story is more about hypocrisy than any particular gay issue.

@TomB, thanks for intejecting common sense into the equation...they want us to be tolerant and accepting on their terms, as if no other humans have thoughts and feelings...I once had a direct report worker claim, "hey, you know jane doe is gay?" my response was "no, I thought she just had a cold". Couple of hours later that same employee came back and said #$%$ I'm gay too and what the hell does that statement mean?" I replied, "it means I don't care what their orientation is, they(and you) are here to get a job done- now get back to your job". At lunch, that employee sat with me at a table of straights and confessed,"I'm sorry, I know the workplace isn't the forum for this" and gained the respect of everyone in the office.Bottom Line, so what?

Gay rights activists do not chose to be hypocrites, they are born that way.

If I could, I would give you a gold medal for stating the truth.

Now gay has become synonymous with sexual deviation.
      • Steve 3 months ago
Yes, I hate that so many words have become synonymous with sexual deviations. I can't order a tossed salad anymore without people snickering.

Remember Bobby Vinton? He sang "Am I Gay?", maybe Nixon should look that up on You Tube, and sing a few lines.

I've never understood WHY I'm suppose to care what people do in the privacy of their homes. Be gay. Be straight. Be Bi. Please, please understand-i really really don't want to know and I really, really DON'T CARE.

Who you have sex with is a conscious choice.
      • M 3 months ago
True! If not a choice, then all homosexuals are always being raped against their will.
      • Rudi 3 months ago
That's true to a degree. A lot of people, however, lie about the real object of their attraction.
      • sarah 3 months ago
That's true but that does not define their sexuality.
    • W  •  3 months ago
Isn't it always a choice who you want to have sex with?

Being sexually active at all, is a choice. Provided the oppourtunity exists.

why does she insist on calling herself gay when she's bisexual.
    • Bishop Lenbrennan  •  3 months ago
She spent 15 years with a man and had two kids, now she has spent 8 years with a woman...........sounds like a choice to me!
    • Realist  •  3 months ago
Is she the victim of intolerance among those demanding tolerance?

"Activists" of all stripes need to get a real job and shut up.
    • Richard  •  3 months ago
Gay activists want to normalize activities that are practiced by a minority. Anti-gay activists want to eliminate what does not affect them in any way. The remaining 90% of us don't care who is in your bedroom.

I knew it wouldn't take long before she'd be forced to "clarify". Oh, brother! Shouldn't have been any outcry over it in the first place.

When dealing with gays or gay conversations - it's best not to. It's the 'do these pants make me look fat?' situation, one can't win.
    • Mo  •  Baltimore, Maryland  •  3 months ago
Every time you engage in sexual activity you are making a choice!

I guess all those guys in prison are biologically gay too? I've always been a lesbian myself!
    • Sir John Cool  •  3 months ago
Why is it so important to gays. To be viewed as having no option but being gay? If being gay is okay. Why do they care?
    • Happy to Be American  •  3 months ago
Who cares why anyone sleeps with anyone. As long as they're adults, live and let live and equal rights to all. It isn't rocket science.
