Access Hollywood has received a letter from jailed former "Prison Break" star Lane Garrison.

[ All Access: Lane Garrison ]

The actor was sentenced to three years and four months in October for a drunk driving crash that killed a teenager in December 2006.

"Greetings and Happy New Year to you and everyone at Access Hollywood from Donovan State Prison," Garrison wrote. "Never did I think I would be saying the words 'happy & prison' in the same sentence and not be on a set. It's pure irony coming from the show and now living the real deal. It's surreal and mind-blowing to say the least."

Garrison told Access that recently, he watched his former show with his fellow incarcerees.

"Just this past Monday they let a group of inmates watch the season premiere of Prison Break," he wrote. "It felt like an out of body experience as I stood around a crowd of tattooed felons watching Michael Scofield try to escape … all of us longing to be free as well!"

While in prison, Garrison appears to have taken time to reflect and noted in his letter how hard things have been for him. He also said he hopes people have taken a lesson from his story.

"This has been the hardest year of my life," he wrote. "I hope people, young and old, are learning from my mistakes and what can happen when you drink and drive. I have much to say about the pain I've felt and seen inside of prison. It has been eye-opening and a harrowing experience."

Robert and World, It breaks my heart that someone died needlessly, but I bet it will break Lane's heart for the rest of his life. Who are you both to judge? Where is your compassion? The irony is that if people had more compassion, laws would be fairer, people would learn more and we would grow as a population. The other irony is the single most judgmental people Ive met, hit church 3

Hopefully somewhere in that letter he "reflected" on how hard things have been for the family of the teenager who didn't get off so easy with just three years and four months . . . . . he got a DEATH SENTENCE ! Because of him, tThat family will be in pain for the rest of their lives and he's whining about his harrowing experience and the pain he's felt
