The return of
90210 was a coup for the CW network: Tuesday night's two-hour episode was watched by 4.9 million viewers, making it the highest-rated scripted series premiere in the history of the network, according to the
Hollywood Reporter.
Among coveted viewers aged 18-40-years-old, the show tied with the premiere of CW's ratings champ,
America's Next Top Model.
The first episode of the spin-off featured original cast favorites
Jennie Garth and
Shannen Doherty, who shared the screen with a wide array of fresh faces.

Boston Globe called it "pretty bad," while
Variety slammed it as "a pallid copy of the original fish out of water story only with shinier cars, fancier clothes and Botox aplenty." It's "a perfectly competent and reasonably seamless revival that understands what made the original tick," wrote a
Newsday critic.
