54th Grammy's Nominee Chris Brown: The Past is in the Past?

    Chris Brown

When Chris Brown came on the music scene with such hits as "Run It" and "Gimme That," the R&B recording artist was on a lucrative and drama free path with his singing and extraordinary dance moves. But then came 2009 when the performer pleaded guilty to felony assault charges against singer and girlfriend Rihanna. He was sentenced to five years probation and six months of community service. But what he experienced after the sentencing proved to be far worst.

Although Brown retained his most loyal fans, the media and a large majority of the public were on Rihanna's side, making the then 19-year-old star an instant villain. Lots of unfortunate things happened to him after that. For example, in 2009 he was removed from BET's lineup; he claimed that "Graffiti," his third studio album, was not getting enough air time, and in 2010, his European tour was cancelled.

But is the past in the past? Tweeted Brown, "Individuality is key... Fresh is a way of life.... When people constantly bring up your name(good/bad) thank them!"

Brown's career was negatively affected, but he never disappeared from the music scene entirely. He kept at it. He kept pushing.

The result? "F.A.M.E," his 4th studio album, has received a large amount of recognition. Brown has been nominated for three Grammy awards, including Best R&B Album.

Does the 22-year-old Brown of 2012 deserve a second chance, especially since rumor has it that he and Rihanna, 23, are friends again, or possibly even more than that? If he can stay away from temper tantrums, such as the one he put on at Good Morning America in 2011, maybe he can stay on the high road. His loyal fans, and those fans who have warmed up to him again, look forward to seeing him sing, dance and possibly win his first Grammy at the 54th annual Grammy's, on CBS, on February 12 at 7 central.

I am not condoning CB beatdown of Ri-Ri! I will say: Good Luck to you, Chris Brown! When the MEDIA Blackballs (Interesting Term) African-American celebrities, it takes them years to recover from ALL the negative press & scrutiny! Case In Point: Nipplegate 2004! Janet Jackson is STILL frowned upon! MaDonna of ALL people (prior to her SuperBowl performance) stated we won't see her nipples, we ALL know who she was referring to!
      • Brett 3 months ago
I thought Janet was frowned upon because she blew up like a rhino and put out crappy albums. Now I know the real reason.
      • Sunny V 3 months ago
To Brett: The REAL reason behind Ms. Jackson's 7 years plus MEDIA witchhunt is RACISM! It has nothing to do with her weight, yet EVERYTHING to do with her race! RACISM is alive & well in North America! Justin TimberSnake's name was unscathed, yet JJ continues to endure Entertainment SCARS that have affected the sales of her cds & dvds!
      • Ronald 3 months ago
Janet's albums have been terrible since "All For You". But how can you compare a slip of the nipple during a stage show to a man BEATING a woman???

Chris Brown needs to ignore the haters and do him! Everyone makes mistakes, in the heat of the moment, the past is the past. Everyone get over it. He didn't assault you so why trip, if Rihannas not.

What amazes me about this society is it's hypocrisy. There are people that have made minor crimnal mistakes, done their time, but are forced to pay for their crimes for the rest of their lives. The argument is that this protects us in society and teaches people to think before they act. Well, how does that point get across when we're the same society that idolizes celebrities that admittedly sold drugs and robbed people in the past; that break the law and get slaps on the wrists. That same society that derives so much enjoyment from reality shows where grown adults verbally and physically attack one another, If the past is the past for celebrities it needs to be that way for everyone. Most of these celebrities wouldn't even spit on a common person and some of these idiots are so quick to jump to their defense......these people aren't going to do anything for you. Please understand that at the end of the day, they're no better than anyone else.

i agree. why do the "common folk" defend these people? they couldn't care less about them.

Beating a woman is not a simple criminal mistake in the moral judgment of society.

SOCIETIES HYPOCRISY is when Charlie Sheen, Lindsey Lohan and the likes can do whatever, brake the law, get a slap on the wrist and all is forgiven. Hypocrisy has a color in society, but I won't name it.

Michael Vick will always be a dog-killer, Chris Brown will always be associated with beating on Rhianna, the Catholic Church will be known for its horrible sex abuse cases. In each of these cases their were innocent animals and human beings hurt......save the redemption for them, not another boy with anger problems.
      • I'M SO 3 months ago
..and the Catholic Church WILL ALWAYS BE KNOWN AS RAPIST. Call it like it is. Like I said earlier, society is a hypocrite.

THE PAST IS THE PAST LET IT GO,HE HAS DONE HIS TIME AS THE JUDGE SAID SO LEAVE HIM ALONE ,THERE ARE MORE HORRIBLE THINGS GOING ON IN THE WORLD AND LIFE THAN WHAT HAPPENED YEARS AGO,PEOPLE GET A LIFE,AND GROW THE HELL UP.
      • J 3 months ago
Okay, well I'd like to see you put that same determination into demanding such amnesty to your typical everyday person because that person would've actually went to prison for that type of assault and that person would've been blackballed from the employment world for the rest of his life.Because Chris Brown is a celebrity he's above the same scrutiny ordinary people face......that's what's wrong with this country today.
      • kathy m 3 months ago
i didn't know beating the tar out of someone was a minor infraction in your opinion.

Chris Brown's true colors will shine through over time. If he has grown, that will show. If not, that will show too. He is a relevant performer and the Grammy is a stage. Let's see what he does when the light shines on him especially if he does not receive a warm welcome.
    • Sandra  •  Overland Park, Kansas  •  3 months ago
Chris Brown is a loser and he continues to show his "true colors" such as the GMA debaucle!!!

he'll be broke by 30. Urkel's future looks brighter than this chumps. I could care less about Rhianna or if he beat her #$%$ but he should be arrested for that nonsense he calls music. Go do the Carlton dance fool.
