With the Oscars airing live on February 26, many are reminiscing about the best and worst gowns from past ceremonies. Although some consider black gowns too simple and taking the easy way out in red carpet fashion, there have been several that have been anything but boring. Throughout the many years of Oscar dresses, which celebs wore black gowns that still stand out as being some of the best to grace the red carpet?
Julia Roberts
In 2001, the actress stepped on the stage to accept her Best Actress award for her role in "Erin Brockovich" and took the breath away from many fashion-loving ladies. Julia wore a vintage black Valentino gown that had white vertical stripes down the train and one that went down the front. The simple ponytail accentuated the dress beautifully.
Camila Alves
The black Kaufman Franco dress from the 2011 Oscars might seem simple at first, but a second glance reveals that the plunging neckline and ball-gown style bottom make it a classy but sexy fashion pick. The Brazilian model wore her hair pulled back and accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Later that year, she got engaged to long-time boyfriend Matthew McConaughey; the couple already has two children together.
Reese Witherspoon
In 2011, the blonde looked Barbie-esque in a strapless black Armani Prive gown that had a horizontal white strip at the neckline; her hair was in a high ponytail that had a slight flip at the end. At the ceremony, she presented the award for Best Supporting Actor.
Angelina Jolie
At the 2009 Oscars, the actress wore a black strapless Elie Saab gown that had a sweetheart neckline. The gathering of fabric in the front added just enough flow to the dress to keep it from being too bland. Rather than go for diamonds, the stunner opted for green earrings. She was nominated for Best Actress for her role in "Changeling" but lost out to Kate Winslet.
