The 85th Academy Awards premieres on Sunday, February 24, at 7 p.m. ET, on ABC. This time comedian, and creator of "Family Guy," Seth MacFarlane will host the show.
The history of the Oscar nominees and winners is always fun to look back on. The year is 1993, and the 1992 Oscars, hosted by Billy Crystal, were awarded on March 29, 1993. Who were some of the nominees and what are they doing now?
Robert Downey, Jr.
Robert Downey, Jr. was nominated for Best Actor at the 65th Academy Awards for his role in the 1992 movie "Chaplin." He attended the ceremony with pregnant wife Deborah Falconer who divorced him in 2004. Both wore black velvet to the event.
It all happened before the actor descended into drug and prison hell. By the mid-2000s, he slowly made a comeback. The "Iron Man" actor married film producer Susan Levin in 2005. Their son Exton was born in February 2012. Downey has another son, Indio, born in 1993 with Falconer. What does a clean and sober Downey have to say about fatherhood the second time around? "Well I find it easier," Downey said. "I'm not smoking pot [all the time], which [makes it] difficult when you're changing a diaper and you're stoned."
Denzel Washington is an actor who has maintained a stellar image, and he has stayed out of trouble throughout his career. Even though he's a huge star and a major celebrity, he explained in a recent interview why he doesn't hang around with celebrity types. "Even within the industry, I don't have any actor friends. My friends are old friends. One's an ex-music guy, the other's a restaurant owner and the other's an ex-pro ballplayer," Washington said. "I don't make friends! Maybe I'm not a butt kisser. Maybe I'm not a schmoozer. I'm not about to go to a party to try to get a job. And then when you have children, the other friends become other parents. We'd coach baseball or basketball. My wife and I were raised right."
He appeared in the 1992 movie "Malcolm X" for which he was nominated for Best Actor. Married to Pauletta Washington since 1983, the dashing Denzel wore a stylish tux to the 65th Academy Awards, and his wife wore a black and white striped gown. Today, the 53-year-old actor has been nominated for another Best Actor award at the 85th Oscars for his performance in "Flight."
Michelle Pfeiffer was nominated for Best Actress for the 1992 "Love Field." She dressed modestly in a black pant suit for the 1992 Oscars, and she attended the event with then boyfriend and soon to be husband David E. Kelley.
Since then, Pfeiffer has starred in a number of roles; lately they include such films as the 2007 "Hairspray" and later the 2012 "Dark Shadows."
Still beautiful at 54, the actress "struggled with [her] own image as a sexual person," and she didn't feel confident in her own skin until she was 31 when she starred as Susie Diamond in 1989's "The Fabulous Baker Boys." "Even two years before that, I would not have been able to play the part of the sexually appealing Susie Diamond. She was dynamic and unapologetic and I was able to put on those clothes and play the part," Pfeiffer said. "I think, because of the way I looked, I had stayed away from buying anything sexy or overtly sexual."
Whatever happened to Jaye Davidson, you ask? The former actor, now 44, was nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for 1992's "The Crying Game." At the Oscar ceremony, the androgynous Davidson, who played a transvestite in the film, wore his hair in a ponytail. In 1999, Davidson quit the acting business to be a fashion design assistant in London. Reportedly, Davidson never wanted a career in acting.
The lovely Marisa Tomei was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the 1992 "My Cousin Vinny" at the 65th Academy Awards, and she won it. Accepting the first award of that evening, Marisa wore a black and white sleeveless gown with long black gloves. The 48-year-old Tomei is engaged to 36-year-old actor Logan Marshall-Green.
