Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig went from being a new couple to newlyweds, tying the knot just over a year ago. Both of the British stars have been notoriously private when it comes to revealing anything about their whirlwind romance, but now Weisz speaks out for the first time about her life with the man who plays James Bond.In just six months,
The 42-year-old actress says that her being married to another famous actor doesn’t mean they’re discussing the showbiz industry from morning to night. “We don’t sit around talking about acting but you both understand you’ve got to be flexible,” she tells the U.K.-edition of Marie Claire. “Every few months you start a new job.” She adds that she doesn’t lose sleep over Craig’s on-screen love scenes (“It’s just make-believe”) and reveals that, as a couple, they’re not at all competitive.“Luckily we’re not going up for the same roles," she says. "Actually I wouldn’t mind some men’s roles.”
And regarding the increased interest in her private life since she married Craig, 44, in June 2011, Weisz says it doesn’t bother her. “As far as downsides go, I don’t think it’s a big one,” she tells the magazine. “It’s something we deal with together.” But further probing into the relationship gets quickly shut down by the actress. Asked if it was love at first sight for the couple, she hesitates, shakes her head, and then replies, “I’m going to change the subject.” But before moving off the topic entirely, she adds: “It wasn’t really like that. We’d been friends for ages.”
It seems natural that Weisz wouldn’t want to provide an exact timeline to her relationship with Craig – with whom she co-starred in the 2010 film “Dream House” – because they both ended engagements just before they were captured in their first PDA moment during the Christmas holidays in 2010. The month before they were seen holding hands in a remote area in the English countryside, Weisz ended her relationship with her fiancé, director Darren Aronofsky, with whom she has a 6-year-old son, Henry. Similarly, Craig was also engaged – to film producer Satsuki Mitchell, who appeared on his arm at 007 premieres – and broke things off at the same time.
But the connection between Weisz and Craig – who has a grown daughter, Ella, from a previous marriage – was clearly undeniable. On Valentine’s Day 2011, they went a little more public with their romance, “making out and dancing all night” at a trendy New York City club, an eyewitness told Us Weekly at the time. Then in June, they quietly tied the knot in upstate New York. The only people in attendance at the nuptials were their children and two close friends.
While Weisz made a point to keep the details about when she first fell in love with Craig to herself in the interview, she did make one telling comment when asked about aging. “I do think things get better as you grow older in terms of gaining a real confidence,” she tells Marie Claire. “I'm less desperate. It's just wisdom. You've tried out a lot of things and you've failed a lot of times – you just get better at choosing things that are going to suit you better. Everything is a gamble. You've no idea where the journey is going to take you.”
