(November 24, 2006) -- Tara Reid?s startling admission that she?s undergone a breast implant procedure which left her disfigured helped raise public awareness of this medical nightmare. So how widespread are botched plastic surgeries? We examine the phenomenon as our Makeover Nation week continues.
Facelift, eyelid tuck, chin implant, facial liposuction, breast augmentation, ear surgery, nose surgery, rhinoplasty? With all these options, there?s plenty of room for mistakes.
More than two years after receiving an ?Extreme Makeover,? James Bowers is still experiencing pain. ?It is a constant pain, it?s kind of like a numbness, and from this side of my nose all the way over here is still numb,? he told Access. ?My right cheek implant slipped, so now it?s resting on a nerve, so its kind of painful.?
After also receiving a nose job, chin implant and dental work, James blames the doctor, not the show, for the mistake, and now he wants it fixed. ?I don?t care if he takes them out but unfortunately, I think if he takes them out I'm going to have droopy skin, cause I mean? they're pretty large. I mean they're the size of a silver dollar.?
Adds his wife Kacie, who he met on the show, and who is pleased with her own ?Extreme Makeover,? ?I mean, if you look real closely you can see them,? she said. ?This whole area here is cheek implant.?
Forty-year-old Monika is another person who has had plastic surgery troubles. She was left scarred after a routine C-section scar removal procedure. ?My girlfriends have cried when they've seen it, ?Monika told Access. ?My daughter doesn't wanna have babies because she doesn't wanna be ugly like me when she grows up, and it's been very, very difficult emotionally.?
Monika visited Dr. Gary Motykie of Beverly Hills Body. ?About half of my plastic surgery is fixing other plastic surgery,? he said.
Dr. Motykie refined Monika?s scar and contoured her waist in a six-hour surgery. Three weeks of recovery later, Monika had a new, thinner scar and smoother tummy. ?It's a difficult thing to have to go through, something that's botched. But luckily in the end for me it's ending well,? Monika said.
