CLEARWATER, Florida (Reuters) - The son of wrestler and reality TV star Hulk Hogan was sentenced to eight months in jail on Friday for causing a car crash that seriously injured his passenger.

Nick Bollea, 17, pleaded no contest to a charge of reckless driving with serious bodily harm before he was sentenced by Pinellas County Judge Phillip Federico.

Bollea crashed his car into a tree in Clearwater, Florida, on August 26 last year. Police said he was speeding and racing another car.

Bollea's passenger and friend, John Graziano, 22, suffered severe head injuries and remains in a semiconscious state in a hospital.

"I think there has to be some punishment," Federico said at the hearing. He also sentenced Bollea to five years probation and 500 hours of community service and suspended his driver's license for three years.

Graziano's parents asked that Bollea be sentenced to some jail time. They said their son would need medical care for the rest of his life and are suing Hogan and Bollea for millions of dollars in damages.

Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, defended his son.

"Nick is a good person. He's kind, gentle and compassionate," he told the judge.

Nick Bollea apologized to Graziano's family and his own. "I pray for John every day. I'm terribly sorry," he said.

Do you think this was the first time John was in the car when Nick was racing? I think not. Do you think John was asking Nick to slow down or stop the car. I bet not. 22 year old people need to be responsible for their own actions. You pay your money and you tale your chances. The lawyers are looking for "deep pockets". Hogam family...look out.

I think that Nick did a stupid thing that MANY teenagers do and where most get lucky - as wel know many times they do not and they or their friends end up dead or seriously injured. Now this has been going on since Ford put cars on the road - especially with teenage boys. Being wealthy had nothing to do with it - who his parents are had nothing to do with it - being 17 and male did. JUST SO SAD

i think it is time that the law starts treating famous people the same as non famous people. it should not matter who they are. if they hurt another person they should be in as much trouble as anyone else.

Graziano's parents are right to ask for jail time, but to sue for MILLIONS of $ is opportunistic, I get that their kid will need lots of medical help for the rest of his life but some how i don't think the 22 yr old was 'dragged' along to go racing, and should put some responsibility on their kid too. I would sue also but not for millions thats just taking advantage

This is what parents get for buying kids fast cars--and letting them drive them even after they know they have drank and drove their cars before.Nick should have been burning the rubber on his tennis shoes.
