Demi Lovato Reveals She Has Bipolar Disorder

A few days after she tweeted about Catherine Zeta-Jones' bravery in speaking out about her struggle with bipolar II disorder, Demi Lovato has revealed she too suffers from the disorder.

Lovato -- who has spoken out recently about her struggles with bulimia, anorexia and self-mutilation -- said that she did not learn she was bipolar until she went into treatment for three months this past fall.

"I never found out until I went into treatment that I was bipolar," she told People in an interview that took place last month.

Lovato said, reflecting on her past behavior, the diagnosis doesn't surprise her.

"Looking back it makes sense," she said. "There were times when I was so manic, I was writing seven songs in one night and I'd be up until 5:30 in the morning.... I feel like I am in control now where my whole life I wasn't in control."

As she has said before, Lovato hopes her openness about her struggles will prove inspiring and useful for others dealing with similar issues.

"What's important for me now," she says, "is to help others."
