2010′s Ten Best Celebrity Tweeters
Though early adopters like Ashton Kutcher have been regularly tweeting for what seems like ages, 2010 was the year that pretty much every last bold-faced name gave in and signed up for an account. Increasingly rendering publicists irrelevant, Twitter has become the de facto medium for celebs to deny rumors or make announcements -- a place to be funny or confessional, self-deprecating or self-promotional.
Of all the celebrities out there, whose accounts did we enjoy following the most this year?
1. Amanda Bynes. Bynes (who went by the twitter handle @chicky) used Twitter as a stream-of-consciousness of sorts, sharing all kinds of wonderful, zany and (at times) surprisingly perceptive thoughts. Following the actress' account was signing up for a continual source of hilarity and drama. Bynes managed to create something of a tabloid scandal with her Twitter (hinting at an unknown celebrity lover whom she called her "super boo"), coined her own lexicon (a "hair cape" is "a hip way of referring to your hair," for example) and even inspired some New Yorkers to make a viral video based around her tweets. She left Twitter at the end of the summer and we have mourned her departure ever since.
2. Mindy Kaling. Kaling, who both writes for and plays Kelly Kapoor on "The Office," is as hilarious on Twitter as she is IRL. Choice tweet: "I like when you ask for salad on the side and they accidentally give you fries, so you can be like, sorry God, I tried."
3. Steve Martin. He's this up-and-coming comedian. People keep telling us to check him out so we looked up his Twitter and it's not bad. Guess he's "one to watch." Choice tweet: his recent jury duty-related tweets are golden.
4. Donald Glover. Glover -- a former "30 Rock" writer and current "Community" actor -- maintains a sharp and witty Twitter. Bonus: His tumblr showcases an excellent eye for style and taste in music. Choice tweet: "Don't hate the layer, hate the frame." #Photoshoprapper."
5. Diablo Cody. She doesn't tweet often, but when she does, it is good. Choice tweet: "Watching an incredible documentary about two Armenian-American women and their struggle to open a boutique in Miami."
6. Rihanna. Now, now, you're probably raising your eyebrows at this one. But take our word for it: she's surprisingly funny! (Check out her tweet after running into Justin Bieber, for one example.) And she gets points for writing replies to a whole bunch of fans every day, which, for a star of her magnitude, is pretty impressive.
7. Heidi Montag. Heidi, Heidi, Heidi. Whatever she may be feeling on a given day -- whether it be sadness (one tweet reads, simply, "crying") or relief ("I had a nightmare that I slept without my nose tape on thank God it wasn't true!") -- her account is always good for some LOLs.
8. Lord_Voldemort7. True, Voldemort is not a "celebrity" in the typical sense of the word, but whoever it is that is tweeting under this handle is fantastic at what he/she does.
9. Taylor Swift/Lady Gaga. Both of their Twitter accounts are so on brand that their tweets can often verge on parodies of themselves, but -- considering so many pop stars clearly don't bother doing their own tweeting (Britney, Justin Timberlake, etc.) -- there's something kind of endearing about the fact that these two (seemingly) do.
10. Kanye West, sort of. We were as excited by the phenomenon that was Kanye West's Twitter as the next person when he made his debut on the social networking service earlier this year. West seemed to really enjoy the medium and gave us amusing insight into his daily life ("Sometimes I get emotional over fonts" and "You basically can say anything to someone on an email or text as long as you put LOL at the end" were particular favorites). But we were dismayed to note that, as soon as his album came out at the end of November, he all but quit the Twitterverse (he's tweeted just five times in December). It seems like his Twitter adventure may have just been an extended publicity ploy... which is a bummer.
