Emma Watson: People Thought I Was a Lesbian After Haircut

Emma Watson dazzles with her short 'do. Danny Martindale/WireImageNowadays, Emma Watson is a true style maven. Whether the 21-year-old is rocking her signature pixie haircut on the street, wearing a gorgeous, high-end gown on the red carpet, or appearing in ads for Lancome, her look is in the spotlight -- usually for all the right reasons. Unfortunately, she is criticized for her choices on occasion. "Fashion gave me a chance to feel like I was something outside of 'Potter,'" the starlet reveals to Britain's The Independent. "I'm a multidimensional person and that's the freedom of fashion: that you're able to reinvent yourself through how you dress and how you cut your hair or whatever."

Speaking of haircuts, Emma -- who rose to fame playing "Harry Potter's" Hermione Granger -- made quite a drastic change when she traded her long locks for a Twiggy-like look in the summer of 2010. The actress had to keep the length for a decade prior to that for playing her alter ego in eight films, and while she was excited for the change, not everyone felt the same because they weren't quite sure what it meant. "I had journalists asking me if this meant I was coming out, if I was a lesbian now," Watson recalls. "That haircut did make me realize how subjective everyone's opinion is. Some people were crazy for it and some people just thought I'd lost my s---. All I can do is follow my instincts, because I'll never please everyone."

In addition to experimenting with her style post-"Potter," Emma has also been free to take on new roles. The actress, who famously attended Brown University and is now studying at England's University of Oxford, appeared in the Oscar-nominated "My Week With Marilyn," and will star alongside Paul Rudd and Nina Dobrev in the romantic drama "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" next.

"Doing the 'Potters' was such a bubble and then having to figure out how to function in the real world has been a challenge," Emma explains. "But it's been the small successes for me: I know how to use a washing machine, I can cook. It's worth it to me not to feel disconnected from everything, feeling like I'm in touch with people who do other things than acting or being in the entertainment industry."

Are you a fan of Emma's short hair?

A hair cut doesn't make you or unmake you a lesbian. I guess what I mean is it doesn't matter how you cut your hair. Great haircut! I love it. Sassy!

I'm just not a fan of short hair on women, but Emma is a very beautiful young lady.

Does long hair make you a flirt? Are we boxing people in to groups now? I like boxes. Who else wants a box to be stuffed into? FUN!

I can not believe that someone in the media asked this girl if she was a lesbian because she got a haircut. By that token, do we start outing male celebrities with long hair? It's a haircut for heaven's sake. How dumb can people be?

Not once did I associate Emma's short hair with lesbian. She's a beautiful girl who can pull off short hair. It took me by surprise at first but it's grown on me and I love it on her.

Talk about stereotyping. Short hair = lesbian. SMH.

Emma, you would be pretty if you were bald. Stand your ground and be who God made you to be. Period.

But why is she wearing two watches ?

Maybe they're set for two different time zones. She might have a friend who lives in another time zone, and she wants to make sure she doesn't call that friend at 3 am.

I wonder when people started assuming that short hair = lesbian and long hair = straight.
      • Pack Mule 2 months ago
When they saw how true it was are you seriously that daft
      • Katherine 2 months ago
???? I think that is silly too. Why would length of your hair have anything to do with that. Some people are just uneducated I guess.
      • Ryan 2 months ago
Stereotypes form when they are viewed as the more frequent occurrence. So I would guess it started when it seemed that more lesbians had short hair than long

I think her short cut looks stunning on her face/frame. It definitely lets her break away from frizzy haired Hermione. I think Emma Watson is gorgeous, and the short cut makes her even more so.
