Neil Patrick Harris Interview: How He’ll Spend the Super Bowl

When the New England Patriots take on the New York Giants at Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, Neil Patrick Harris will be cheering one of the teams on, but not because he's a big fan. Harris, who's an invited guest of CBS president Les Moonves, revealed that the choice is much more practical.

"Seeing that the box that I'm in is gonna be pro-Patriot, I'm gonna head to that direction so I'm not kicked out of where I'm sitting," Harris told omg! in an interview. "But I do co-reside in Harlem. New York is in my neighborhood, so I support it."

After growing up in New Mexico, where he played tennis in high school, and then moving to L.A. -- places without their own NFL teams -- NPH said he's rarely watched football games live. He's more likely to be checking them out on TV, where he can watch instant replays and the analysts' notes. The "How I Met Your Mother" star had a fantasy football team for a few years but quit when he realized he was becoming so obsessed with each player's individual performance that he wasn't really paying attention to the actual games!

Well, most everyone will be paying attention to this weekend's matchup, whether or not they're sports fans. They'll be checking out the halftime performance by Madonna as well as the much buzzed-about commercials, one of which will feature a product Harris is promoting -- M&Ms. Earlier this week in L.A., he introduced a new M&Ms character, Ms. Brown, although he noted that his favorite color of the chocolate candies is "green for obvious reasons."

After the Super Bowl, the 38-year-old will return to his CBS sitcom gig playing the womanizing Barney Stinson. Harris insisted that even seven seasons into "HIMYM," and after becoming quite the family man himself, with fiance David Burtka and 2-year-old twins Gideon and Harper at home, he still enjoys playing someone's who's the opposite of settled. But does he think Barney will ever stop playing the field? "There's no way for me to know," NPH said. "I'm aware of a little bit of information, but we still have a whole season and a half yet left to go. It doesn't seem like it's in his DNA to settle down for long."

Harris explained that while he signed an eight-year contract at the beginning of the show's run, he would probably be willing to stay on longer. "I would love to do it for as long as they would have us and with that being said, for as long as it's still funny and still makes sense," he said. "I'm pretty convinced that as the years pass we'll all look back on this job as one of those great, once-in-a-lifetime jobs."

Catch Neil Patrick Harris in "How I Met Your Mother" at 8 p.m. ET/PT Mondays on CBS.

      • Chelle 3 months ago
Their "real" parents are the ones who are raising them, loving them, teaching them to walk and talk. Those are their "real" parents.

Here is a synopsis of the hate comments on this story (provided as a service so you won't have to scroll through and actually read them):

      1. Most of the comments are ignorant, intolerant hate messages against gays, using football terms to make their infantile arguments (such as "tight ends"; game between the Oilers and Packers; etc.). If you are looking for something clever or witty, it is not there. They are all comments a12-year-old would make while touching pee pees with his friends on the playground.

      2. Some are very hateful, expressing a desire of death to anyone who is gay. Perhaps the FBI should be notified since that falls under the category of a federal hate crime.

      3. Many suggest that the children should be forcibly removed from a loving home and returned to a life of despair and hopelessness in an orphanage since gay parents couldn't possibly raise a child properly. I'm not an expert, but it's only been in recent years that gay couples were allowed to adopt. So, that means that the overwhelming majority of gay people were raised by straight parents. Also, recent national headlines suggest that pedophiles are generally in long-term male/female marriages. The same could be said for congressmen who slide their feet under men's room stalls and text pictures of their weiner.

      4. I really don't care what anybody is doing for the super bowl, but i believe NPH is extremely talented and enjoy his work (although How I Met Your Mother is a tiresome premise that is not one of my favorites since it has gone on too long - name the mother already!).

To prove whatever point you might glean from this, watch the haters start attacking me personally rather than providing a reasoned argument. they are incapable. It is just pure ignorance...the kind that points to our crumbling society more so than a gay lifestyle, a bible thumper or race or anything else.

Recent studies have shown that children raised by homosexuals have 0% child abuse. I'm a firm believer that LOVE is LOVE and gender plays no part in matters of the heart. I love NPH, grew up watching Doogie Howser, M.D. Sadly, Mark, you are completely right about the comments. I sometimes forgot what a sad world we live in since I prefer to surround myself with open-minded people. Yahoo! seems to cater to the overly narrow-minded.

Oh ,I get it now..........you're one of those 'self-hating gays'. #$%$ off because you didn't turn out to be a likeable sideshow. You're one of those gay people who embarrass the crap out of other gay people. You probably have not even had an experience since the sixth grade playground pee pee touching you talk about in every response. I bet you cats wont even eat you after you die old and alone at your Ikea rollaway desk.

I just hate homosexuality because I am a right wing christian and the Bible says it's an abomination to God and it's a sin, but I don't hate Neil Patrick Harris. I just get tired of hearing about who's gay and who isn't gay. I don't care, and I don't need to know. Why is it a hate crime? Isn't all crime hate crime? It's not illegal to not like homosexuality, and if you are a homosexual and don't like heterosexuality, does that make you a hater?

The second picture with all 3 of them in bed is so darn hilarious!

But of course the only thing majority of people here see is a gay guy. So what that he's gay? So what the Bible says it's not right? The Bible has a lot of rules that a lot of people break (I've never met anyone who has not broken any of the Ten Commandments, for starters). If he wants to be gay, let him be gay. You have nothing to do with his life, and vice versa, so keep your noses out his private business.

Of the last 30 comments I've read, 25 of them targeted his sexuality. Just shows you how rotten of a society we've become. Like you're all perfect.

Just watched the Harold and Kumar Christmas in 3D; it was hilarious how NPH spent all his time trying to convince us that he WASN't gay. So what is that all about. Funny thing is, one of the kids, look like the kid in the movie. The entire movie was about opposites.

Do you think they could tell us when the show will actually be funny again? Because trying to believe that any woman would marry Ted is getting more and more far fetched as the show goes on.

Harris has emerged in recent years as one of the most talented stars of stage and screen of his generation. I'm referring mainly to the work he has done away from "How I Met Your Mother" (which is not a favorite of mine). There is nothing worse than an awards show, but Harris was incredible as host of the Tony awards last year. I had no intention of watching the show, but Harris literally commanded your attention.

Seriously, NPH is in a committed relationship and a good father. All you so called Christians who have premarital sex all the time, what is the difference? Then you'll get a divorce and go about having sex again. I've known several so called Christians who have do this. The word hypocrite comes to mind.
