Michelle Williams Growing Out Her Heath Ledger Haircut

Michelle Williams is letting go of a little piece of Heath Ledger.

The “Oz the Great and Powerful” actress revealed that she’s growing out her signature pixie cut – a hairstyle she adopted while they dated and maintained as a “memorial” to him after he died.

“I think I’m ready,” the 32-year-old told E! News. "It's on its way, slowly but surely."

As for the in-between period? Well, it’s awkward, she admitted.

"That's why I've stayed with short hair for so long," explained Williams, who donned a wig to play Glinda the Good Witch in “Oz.” "The mid-stage is insufferable. It's really hard on your self-esteem."

Williams first debuted her hairstyle in February 2007 at the Independent Spirit Awards, which she attended with then-boyfriend Ledger. Less than a year later, the Australian actor – with whom she has a 7-year-old daughter, Matilda – died of an accidental drug overdose.

In an interview with the U.K. edition of Elle in 2011, Williams admitted that although she didn’t always get positive feedback for her Mia Farrow-esque ’do, she continued to keep her hair in the same style as a tribute to Ledger, whom she broke up with months before his death.

“I’ve really grown into it – I feel like myself with short hair,” she told the magazine. “Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair!”

Except for Ledger, she noted.

“I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it,” Williams said.

Now five years after Ledger’s death, Williams is “smiling in a way I hadn’t in a long time,” she recently said, which can be attributed, at least in part, to her year-long romance with Jason Segel. And she’s showed other signs that she’s moving on from her heartbreak. She also recently moved out of the Brooklyn, New York, townhouse she shared with Ledger and to a nearby loft-style apartment that she shares with her new beau and her daughter.

Happiness sure looks good on her!
