Russell Brand Recalls ‘Shaky’ Marriage to Katy Perry as She and John Mayer Split

This hasn't been the best week for Katy Perry.

On the same day news broke that the "Firework" singer and John Mayer had split for the second time, Perry's ex-husband, Russell Brand, reminisced about their "shaky" marriage.

Brand, 37, was co-hosting the XFM Teenage Cancer Trust show on Tuesday when his friends and fellow hosts started making fun of him for his short nuptials.

"That marriage was shaky from the get-go, before I’d even got off the elephant," Brand said.

He and Perry wed in India in October 2010, and in sticking with a traditional Indian wedding procession, Brand arrived to the ceremony on an elephant.

"It was a drag, man," Brand continued. "Let me tell you a thing about marriage. Marriage is a bond that can last up to 14 months. This is a sacred 14-month arrangement. Begins on an elephant. Ends in a newspaper."

Another piece of news hitting newspapers this week: Perry and Mayer have broken up about seven months together.

Us Weekly was first to report that the couple had split (again), and insiders tell omg! that Perry, 28, seems to be taking the breakup hard.

"She's sad," a source says. "She's been hiding out and leaning on close friends."

Both Perry and Mayer are throwing themselves into work, although, the "Daughters" singer has still found time to break for fun.

He was spotted at Eveleigh in West Hollywood over the weekend, and onlookers tell omg! that he appeared to be in "great spirits" while dining with a female companion.

"He was smiling and laughing," one onlooker says. However, a source cautions, "it wasn't a date."

So, what went wrong with Perry and Mayer's whirlwind romance?

People magazine reports in its cover story this week that there had been signs of trouble for weeks, ever since Perry and Mayer returned from a Montana trip together.

The last time the two were photographed together was on March 6, as they were hiking in Los Angeles.

"She gets really withdrawn when there's a change in a relationship," says a Perry pal, who points out that during a recent conversation with the singer, "she didn't mention [Mayer] at all."

However, Us Weekly quotes an insider who says these two may get back together for a third time: "It's not over until it's over. You have to see how things play out. She's leaving the window open. They have both been so focused on work."

Perry and Mayer got back together after a brief breakup this past August. Would you like to see them work things out again? Vote in our poll below.
