Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, 33, and fashion designer Erin Fetherston opened up about their engagement earlier this week when the New York Post asked Fetherston why she wasn’t showing at New York Fashion Week.
“I’m getting married this spring, so I wanted to balance my energy between Fashion Week and planning,” she told the newspaper.
Now the couple is spilling all the beans about their New Year’s Eve engagement in Barbados to People.
“I woke up at dawn to go collect coral and flowers from the beach next to our cottage,” Saporta recalled. “I used them to write out my proposal on our patio and then I woke Erin up in a frenzy to come see a ‘monkey’ that had appeared in our backyard. My sleepy-eyed bride quickly realized the only monkey that morning was me… and of course, she said, ‘Yes!’”
For Erin, the “how” and the “when” were the big surprises that morning. The fact that Gabe was popping the question was not. The pair began discussing tying the knot last fall and Erin played an active role in designing her Lorraine Schwartz, emerald cut diamond ring in a pavé basket with a pavé band.
“It’s luminous and romantic, with the right amount of edge,” Fetherston gushed to People.
Gabe did try to throw off his lady a couple times, hoping to surprise her at least a little.
“My first step was to psych her out,” he admitted. “On Christmas Eve, I gave her a nicely wrapped ring-box that did not contain her engagement ring. It contained a sick amethyst cocktail ring instead.”
The artistic pair began dating in late 2010 and first went public with their relationship approximately four months later when they were spotted making out during a Duran Duran concert.
The wedding itself will be a “classy shindig,” according to Saporta. Needless to say, Fetherston will be designing her own dress.
“My fairytale aesthetic will undoubtedly influence the look and feel of the wedding,” she promised.
