The 43-year-old actor is newly engaged to Brittany Lopez after three years of dating, he confirmed on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” Wednesday night. On the show, Slater recounted the unlikely tale of how they met in 2009 at the Little Palm Island Resort in Miami and why he thought she was a lesbian at first.
“This girl came walking along with another lady, a slightly older lady. I was sitting in my usual spot, eating my oatmeal,” he recalled. “This spot was famous for people proposing to each other … So she’s there, and the next thing I know, she gets down on one knee and proposes to this older lady … I thought I had just witnessed a nice lesbian engagement, so I was coming over to say congratulations, but it turns out it was her aunt, and she was just trying to capture the beauty and romance of the place.
“She was making a joke, and I witnessed it, and it intrigued me, and the next thing I knew, we were hanging out in the Everglades,” he said.
We have to say we’re happy for the guy. The past few years haven’t been as kind to his career, as he’s worked through three failed television shows (“My Own Worst Enemy,” “The Forgotten,” and “Breaking In”) and a slew of movies you’ve never heard of that may or may not have ever made it to the theater.
This will be the “True Romance” star’s second marriage. He tied the knot with Ryan Haddon in 2000 and they had two kids, Jaden, 13, and Eliana, 11. In 2003, Haddon was arrest for assaulting Slater when she allegedly through a glass bottle at him. The actor announced their separation in late 2004, and their divorce was finalized in 2007.
