Frankel and DeGeneres. (Courtesy of The Ellen DeGeneres Show)Bethenny Frankel’s split from husband Jason Hoppy seems like it was a long time coming, but now that it’s over, things aren’t necessarily getting any easier.
In an interview set to air on Wednesday on the “Ellen” show, the reality star-turned-talk show host tearfully shared how she’s been doing since she and Hoppy announced their separation on December 23 … and it hasn’t been a gentle road. No sooner did she sit down, Frankel started crying.
“I feel like a failure,” she told DeGeneres, who also produces her daytime talk show. “I really put it out there. I wanted the fairytale. I thought I had it. And [2-year-old daughter] Bryn is my fairytale … I don’t know how people go through this because this is excruciating, I have to say.”
But Frankel, 40, has a good support system in her fans, who she says have been sending her letters of encouragement and even sharing their own relationship advice with the former “Real Housewives of New York” star. “I also get letters from people saying, ‘Now I don’t believe in love,’ and that’s just not true,” she said. “Love is everywhere. It’s the road and you’re on it. It has peaks and valley and that’s what it is.”
Viewers of the Skinnygirl’s Bravo series, “Bethenny Ever After,” have had a front row seat to her marital troubles with Hoppy over the past two seasons, as the two have even sat down with her personal therapist to try to work out their problems. Although Frankel was sometimes criticized for airing the couple’s dirty laundry on TV, she says it’s part of her promise to show a true “reality” of her life with her fans. “I can’t just only be on reality TV and show everything when it’s fairy princess, fairytale and then not take my hits when I have to,” she insists. “I’ve kind of had the best worst year ever. So I have to, you know, it’s the highs and the lows.”
And Frankel is looking ahead to getting back to the highs. She compares ending her marriage after just two years to ripping off a Band-Aid “so I could start to heal. This will obviously be better. I’m scared of the unknown future. You know everything and one day you don’t know. So I’m scared. I’m older … So this is an important time because it’s about what I do next. How I handle myself now with grace, with dignity? This is the time now that matters.”
