Within moments of her tweets, the Internet blew up with the tale of Gosling's heroics — but Penny is asking for everyone to calm down. "People do lovely, considerate things for other people all the time," she writes in a post on Gawker.com. "I don't believe that the fact that A-list celebrities occasionally act like human beings is in itself news — it might have been slightly newsworthy had Mr. Gosling simply floated by on a cloud of his own cultural significance whilst a young woman got smeared into the tarmac, but lucky for me, even the most chiseled-jawed of us are usually boringly dependable in times of minor peril."
Penny then went on to suggest Americans should find something more important to worry about, calling this country's citizens "very strange" in a rant likely to offend. "They can and do hyperventilate about the most everyday happenings as if they are the most important thing in the world, and then they act completely normal when public conversations are had about war on Iran and war on women's bodies and when Rick Santorum is considered a serious presidential candidate. The real heroes I've met in America are risking everything to make sure that the United States doesn't slide further into bigotry, inequality, and violence whilst everyone is distracted by the everyday doings of celebrities."
Despite Penny's feelings on Gosling (and the country at large), there's no arguing he's become a modern-day hero — at least on the Web. Last year, a video of the "Drive" star breaking up a fight in the middle of a busy Manhattan street also went viral. Gosling, fresh from the gym and carrying what appeared to be groceries, intervened between two men who were duking it out over a stolen painting.
At this rate, it's only a matter of time before Gosling finds a cure for cancer and ends world hunger, right?
