Eddie Murphy Gets ‘Raw’ in Rolling Stone

Eddie Murphy on the cover of Rolling StoneEddie Murphy on the cover of Rolling StoneEddie Murphy's career certainly doesn't look like it used to. The 50-year-old actor rose to fame as a "Saturday Night Live" castmember and became best known for his edgy standup act and R-rated action-comedy flicks like "48 Hrs." and Beverly Hills Cop" in the '80s. Then something changed. Murphy started starring in kids' movies -- from "The Nutty Professor" to "Doctor Doolittle" to the especially embarrassing "Meet Dave" -- stripping him of his comedy street cred. Now, it seems, he wants it back.

"I don't think I'm gonna be doing a lot of family stuff for a while," he says in the November issue of Rolling Stone. "There's really no blueprint, but I'm trying to do some edgy stuff. And I only want to do what I really want to do, otherwise I'm content to sit here and play my guitar all day. I always tell people now that I'm a semiretired gentleman of leisure, and occasionally I'll go do some work to break the boredom up."

Murphy seems to be doing more than breaking up boredom, however, starring in the upcoming ensemble comedy "Tower Heist," along with Ben Stiller Matthew Broderick, and Casey Affleck, and hosting the Oscars next spring. But it still doesn't exactly sound like he has plans to do "Saturday Night Live" anytime soon.

"They were sh**ty to me on "Saturday Night Live" a couple of times after I'd left the show. There was that David Spade sketch [when Spade showed a picture of Murphy around the time of 'Vampire in Brooklyn' and said, 'Look, children, a falling star']. I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore," Murphy explains, though he denies having any hard feelings now. "I felt sh***y about that for years, but now, I don't have none of that. I wouldn't go to retrospectives, but I don't let it linger."

And might "Eddie Murphy Raw" fans have a future stand-up show to look forward to after more than two decades of Murphy staying away from live comedy? Well, maybe.

"It comes up too much for me to not do it again," he says. "It's like, when it hits me, I'll do it, eventually."
