Ricky Martin Opens Up About Coming Out and Getting Married

It was just two years ago that Ricky Martin announced to the world that he was "a fortunate homosexual man." And to mark that milestone, the "Livin' La Vida Loca" singer opens up in the March issue of Details about life with his partner of four years, economist Carlos Gonzàlez Abella, raising 3-year-old twins Matteo and Valentino, and his plans on walking down the aisle one day. "I wish people understood that love manifests in different ways," Martin tells the mag. "Allow me to have my life and I won't mess with yours. That's when I struggle and get angry and punch the table."

Although he waited until he was 38 to come out, Martin says he feels no guilt about waiting so long, even though there had been questions about his sexuality for at least a decade. "You know, when I hear about a boy or girl that comes out when they're 15, I'm like, 'You're so lucky! Kudos. I will give you a standing ovation,'" says the former Menudo member. "But there's nothing you can do about it. You have to go through yesterday to be who you are today."

Martin, now 40, also addressed the controversy surrounding his performance at the 2001 inauguration of George W. Bush, a non-supporter of gay rights. "They gave me the opportunity to represent the Latin community," he clarifies. "It was beyond politics. The next day I was in 85 newspapers around the world -- front page. A lot of people said, 'Would you take a picture with him again?' I said, 'Well, he has to do a lot about human trafficking in order for that to happen.' Now I'd say he has to do a lot about human trafficking and the LGBT community."

Last year, Martin applied for a Spanish citizenship, prompting reports that he planned to wed Abella in his beau's native country, where gay marriage is legal. But the singer -- who will next be seen on Broadway in "Evita" -- won't say if wedding bells are in his and Abella's future. "Trust me, everybody is asking me when I'm going to get married," says Martin. "People that I don't know are pushing it. But it's not something that we're talking about."

While Martin and Abella may not have a relationship approved by the government, they do have a family. The two men raise twin boys, Matteo and Valentino, who were born to a surrogate in August 2008. Now that they're toddlers, the singer is experiencing all the joys that come along with fatherhood -- and the hassles, like the notoriously-difficult task of enrolling children in preschool in New York City, where he lives. "A lot of people told me about this, and I didn't know until I actually embarked on the mission," Martin tells Details. "There are documentaries on this. I had to write an essay about my kids. This is pre-K. This is not college. But I understand that's how it goes. I sat in front of my computer and I opened my heart. Apparently we're in."
